Abstract

A power saw log bench, particularly suitable for sawing up logs with a chain saw, comprises a rectangular framework 1 having a plurality of vertical members 2 on one upright side thereof and a plurality of horizontal members 3 on the top side thereof. One end of each horizontal member 3 abuts a respective vertical member 2. Each vertical member 2 extends above the level of the horizontal members 3. A horizontal cross-member 4 is provided adjoining the vertical members 2 below the level of the horizontal members 3. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Power saw log bench This invention relates to a power saw log bench.
Power saws, also referred to as chain saws, are commonly used in forestry and other occupations. These are hand-held saws, generally driven by a two-stroke motor, and are used for sawing logs transversely. It is well known that, because of the movement of the cutting chain, a chain saw will tend to drag a log towards the user. The saw will also tend to fall towards the user immediately the log has been sawed through. For these reasons, considerable care has to be taken to avoid accidents. It is a general practice to hammer at least two stakes into the ground and to piace the log on the ground resting against these stakes. The saw operator then stands on the other side of the stakes and saws the log up on the ground, the log being held on the ground and against the stakes by the chain movement. This practice involves sawing the logs at ground level and the cutting chain can be damaged on contact with the ground.
An object of the present invention is to make it possible to saw logs with a chain saw at waist height, thereby avoiding possible damage of the cutting chain, and also to prevent the risk of accidents caused by the saw falling towards the user.
The invention provides a power saw log bench, comprising a rectangular framework having a plurality of vertical members on one upright side thereof and a plurality of horizontal members on the top side thereof, one end of each horizontal member substantially abutting a respective vertical member, each vertical member extending above the level of the horizontal members, and a horizontal crossmember being provided adjoining the vertical members below the level of the horizontal members.
In a preferred embodiment, the rectangular framework is made of metal. The horizontal and vertical members are made of metal and wood cladding, and the horizontal cross-member is made of wood.
Reference is now made to the accompanying drawings, in which Figures 1 and 2 are respectively front and rear views of a preferred embodiment of a power saw log bench according to the invention.
As shown in the drawings, the power saw log bench comprises a generally rectangular metal framework 1 having a plurality of top and forward-facing slats defining a plurality of elongated channels therebetween. The slats include a plurality of vertical members 2 on the upright, forward-facing side of the framework and a plurality of horizontal members 3 on the top side of the framework. The forward-facing end of each of the horizontal members 3 abutts a respective vertical member 2. The upper surface of each of the horizontal members 3 is provided with a wood cladding. The front surface of each of the vertical members 2 is also provided with a wood cladding bolted thereto. The wood cladding at the front extends each of the vertical members some distance above the level of the horizontal members.A wooden horizontal cross-member 4 is screwed to the wood cladding of the vertical members some distance below the level of the horizontal members.
The method of operating using the power saw log bench is quite simple. A log to be sawed up is placed on the top surface resting against the upward extending portions of the vertical members. The chain saw is then operated to saw up the log, the saw passing through the channels between the top and forward-facing slats. The chain action of the saw holds the log firmly against the upward extensions of the vertical members.
The top surface of the bench is arranged to be at waist height, making it convenient for the user and preventing any risk of damaging the cutting chain on the ground. The horizontal cross-member 4 acts as a safety device so that, should the saw be allowed to fall when it has passed through the log, it falls onto the cross-member and does not contact the user.
As the cross-member is made of wood, it will not damage the chain saw in such circumstances, and it can also be readily replaced.
Similarly, the wood cladding on the top and forward-facing slats can readily be replaced when it is warn by continual use. The log bench thus provides increased safety for the user, and also increases output since it is more convenient for use than the traditional method of sawing on the ground and also prevents the risk of damaging the chain on the ground.
The bench according to the invention can be made in various sizes, as required for domestic, commercial or forestry use. It can be either collapsible (i.e. a self-assembly kit) or of rigid construction. Larger versions can be fitted with a 3-linkage for easy transportation by tractor. The bench can also have legs with adjustable lengths, for use on uneven ground.
