Description

SPECIFICATION Ballasted tubes for enteral feeding The present invention concerns ballasted tubes for enteral feeding.
To achieve long-term enteral feeding, one uses a feeding tube formed of very flexible tubing made in general of silicone. Such feeding tubes always have as a major inconvenience that they are difficult to put into position by reason of their great flexibility.
To avoid such inconvenience, a proposal has already been made to introduce a mandrel into the feeding tube, but this mandrel is at times difficult to withdraw by reason of the condition of the adherent surface of silicone.
A proposal has also been made to ballast the distal extremity of the feeding tube, either by means of an internal or external bulb, or by means of a load of mercury housed in the tubing of the feeding tube.
This technique of ballasting by means of a load of mercury enables one to ensure natural intake of the feeding tube, from the fact that the mercury ballast ensures the best combination of weight and volume, while preserving a certain flexibility for the feeding tube.
The known method for ballasting such a feeding tube by means of a load of mercury consists in plugging the distal extremity of the tubing of the feeding tube with the help of an adhesive on a silicone base, then loading the mercury with the help of a syringe and a needle through an opening made in the tubing of the feeding tube close to the distal extremity, and injecting through the same opening a plug of adhesive intended to locate the load of mercury in the interior of the tubing of the feeding tube.
Such a method always presents an inconvenience from the fact that it is extremely difficult to purge the air when one injects the load of mercury into the tubing of the feeding tube and when one puts in place the second stopper of adhesive intended to confine the load of mercury.
In consequence, one of the objects of the invention is to produce a ballasted feeding tube for enteral feeding, of the type comprising a flexible tubing, for example of silicone, the distal extremity of which is ballasted by means of a load of mercury, which avoids the inconvenience mentioned previously by permitting one to expel the air without difficulty during the positioning of the load of mercury in the interior of the tubing of the feeding tube.
For this purpose, the present invention proposes a ballasted feeding tube of the type described previ ouslywhich is characterised by the fact that the load of mercury is contained in a closed cartridge which is placed in the interior of the distal extremity of the tubing of the feeding tube.
According to another feature of the invention, this cartridge is made starting from tubing of flexible thermoplastic material, for example of polyvinylchloride.
One can then make such a cartridge by cutting to a sufficient length the tubing which is to become the cartridge, closing by heat one end of the piece of tubing thus obtained, introducing through the other end of the piece of tubing the load of mercury by means of a needle or a syringe, and closing this other end by heating.
According to another feature of the invention, the cartridge filled with mercury is located in the distal extremity of the tubing of the feeding tube between two stoppers of adhesive.
Other features and advantages of the invention will be better understood from reading the detailed description which will follow and which refers to the accompanying drawings, given simply as an illustrative example, and in which: - figure 1 is a section of the distal extremity of a standard feeding tube provided with a load of mercury; - figure 2 shows a section of a cartridge filled with mercury, intended to be installed in a feeding tube according to the invention; and - figure 3 is an elevation, in partial section, of a feeding tube according to the invention, the distal extremity of which is ballasted by means of the cartridge of Figure 2.
Reference will first be made to figure 1 to describe a feeding tube for enteral feeding of which the distal extremity is ballasted by means of a load of mercury, according to the known previous technique.
The feeding tube shown in part in figure 1 comprises flexible tubing 10, made for example of silicone, of which the distal extremity 12 is ballasted by means of a load of mercury 14. To produce such ballasting, one first plugs the distal extremity 12 by means of an adhesive on a silicone base to produce a stopper 16. Then one loads the mercury with the aid of a syringe and a needle through an opening 18 made in the tubing of the feeding tube 10 near the distal extremity 12. Thereafter one injects through this same opening a stopper of adhesive 20 intended to locate the load of mercury in the interior of the distal extremity of the tubing of the feeding tube.
As indicated previously, such a method has a major inconvenience from the fact that it is very dif ficultto purge the airwhen one injects the mercury and when one makes the second stopper of adhesive (stopper 20) confining the mercury.
There will now be described the ballasted feeding tube according to the invention, with reference to figures 2 and 3.
Figure 2 shows a closed cartridge 22 filled with a load of mercury 24 intended to be placed in the distal extremity of a feeding tube. To make such a cartridge one advantageously uses tubing of thermoplastic material, for example of polyvinylchloride, which one cuts to sufficient length. One then closes one end 26, by heating this end. One then introduces through the opposite end, which remains open, the load of mercury with the aid of a syringe and a needle, while placing the needle in the bottom of the tubing 22 so as to expel the air. One then closes the other end of the tube, for example the end 28, by heating. The cartridge filled with mercury, thus obtained, can then be introduced into the tubing of the feeding tube as shown in figure 3.
Figure 3 shows a ballasted feeding tube for enteral feeding, made according to the invention, comprising a flexible tubing 30 of which the proximai end 32 is provided with a suitable connection 34, and of which the distal end 36 is ballasted by means of the cartridge 22 of figure 2. To achieve such ballasting by means of the cartridge 22, one first places this cartridge in the tubing of the feeding tube 30, introducing it through the distal end 36. One then closes this distal end with the aid of a stopper of adhesive 38 on a silicone basis, and one injects through an opening 40, made in the tubing of the feeding tube near the distal end, a second stopper of adhesive 42 intended to locate the cartridge 22 in the interior of the tubing of the feeding tube 30 between the two stoppers 38 and 42.
The feeding tube according to the invention has ail the advantages and the same uses as the standard feeding tubes ballasted with mercury, without having their inconveniences as regards the placing in position of the load of mercury.
Of course the invention is not limited to the embodiment specifically described and shown in the drawings, and one can imagine other variations of construction of it without going outside the scope of the invention.
