Abstract

Friction false-twisting apparatus for selectively producing Z-twist or S- twist yarn and comprises at least three sets (4, 5, 6) of friction discs, each set having at least one friction disc mounted on a respective spindle and overlapping the discs of the remaining sets. The spindles are arranged to be driven in the same yet changeable rotational direction and their axes are in triangular formation. To change from one type of twist to the other, the direction of rotation of all sets is reversed. Additionally the two pivotable sets (4, 5) are pivoted out of their operative positions into positions (as shown) in which none of the discs overlap, to interchange said two sets with the effect that when they are pivoted back into their operative positions all the discs will overlap again but in another order and sequence. Said two sets, in a preferred embodiment, are rotatably arranged in a respective one of two pivotable supports (2, 3) and instead of interchanging the sets by themselves the supports are interchanged with the same effect. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Friction false-twisting apparatus This invention relates to a friction false-twisting apparatus for selectively producing Z-twist or Stwist yarn and comprising at least three sets of friction discs, each set having at least one friction disc coaxially mounted on a respective spindle and overlapping the disc of the remaining sets, the spindles being arranged to be driven in the same yet selectable rotational direction and the axes of which are contained in parallel planes and form in top view - the corners of a triangle.
Apparatus of this kind are known from, for example, the published German Patent Application No. AS 22 13 147. The false twisting effect depends on the rotational direction and on the sequence of the discs. It is necessary for a change-over of the apparatus from Z-twist operation to S-twist operation to draw the disc off the spindles and to transpose their axial sequence yet to adhere to a predetermined sequence. Such a change-over involves a tremendous effort considering that a false-twisting machine -- also referred to as texturing machine - is equipped with up to 200 false-twisting apparatus. Thus, many attempts have been made to simplify the interchange of the discs. The friction discs have been constructed, for example, in such a way that they may be clamped in any desired axial sequence with the aid of clamping means acting in axial direction (see German Petty Patent No.
74 34 582). However, a disadvantage of this is that the individual discs must still be removed from the spindles. In the course thereof they may drop or be damaged or may be re-mounted in a wrong sequence.
Anotherfalse-twisting apparatus is known from the published German Patent Application No.
AS 23 10 802 - based on U.K. Patent Application No. 10,329/72 (Serial No. 1A19,086) - in which apparatus the direction of rotation is reversible for the purpose of changing from an Stwist to a Z-twist and in which one of the three sets of friction discs is arranged to be transposed from its position on one side of the two remaining sets of friction discs to a corresponding position on their side. A disadvantage of this arrangement is that in order to change over the one set of friction discs the apparatus must be removed from the texturing machine so as to swing the one set of discs into its new position.Thereafter, the apparatus requires to be re-mounted in the machine and its position to be re-adjusted in relation to the spindle bearing plate and the drive belt or motor -- which is troublesome and timeconsuming.
Another embodiment of the same German Patent Application provides two separate groups of friction-discs sets in which the sets of discs of the one group are so disposed that each friction disc is succeeded along the yarn path by a friction disc of that set of discs that follows, seen in the direction of the yarn path, in clockwise direction whereas the sets of friction discs of the other group are arranged inversely. A disadvantage of such an arrangement is that the entire set must always be changed necessitating a doubling of the stock to be kept. Bearing in mind the large number of apparatus which can be mounted in a single texturing machine, this involves a considerable expense for material, space and therefore capital.
Thus, it is an aim of the invention to provide false-twisting apparatus which substantially overcomes the aforementioned disadvantages, the construction of which is simple but which renders it possible for a change of the twist to change the order of the discs quickly into the correct sequence.
Accordingly, the present invention is directed to friction false-twisting apparatus as set out in the opening paragraph of the present specification, wherein for the purpose of changing from one selected twist to the other the direction of rotation of all the sets is reversible, wherein two of the sets are arranged to be pivoted out of their operative positions with the discs in one overlapping order and sequence and, when pivoted out, to be interchanged, and wherein the two interchanged sets are arranged to be pivoted back into their operative positions with the discs in another overlapping order and sequence.
The triangle formed by the spindle axes is preferably an equilateral one.
False-twisting apparatus according to the invention tenders it possible to change a texturing machine from a Z-twist to an S-twist, and vice versa, in a very short period of time. All that is required for this purpose is to disengage a stop whereupon the two pivotable sets of friction discs will be pivoted out of their operative positions with the discs in one overlapping order and sequence, interchanged one with the other, and pivoted back into their operative positions with the discs in another overlapping order and sequence.
The spindles are arranged to rotate in respective bearings and may form with them mountings of the sets of friction discs. The two pivotable sets may also include drive components, for example pulleys. In this instance, it is feasible for the two pivotable sets including their mountings and drive components -- if the latter are provided -- to be pivoted out of their operative positions and to be interchanged. However, in a preferred embodiment of the invention the two pivotable sets including their mountings are rotatably arranged in a respective one of two identical pivotal supports which together with the two sets and their respective mountings -- and possibly drive components -- are arranged to be pivoted out of their operative positions and to be interchanged.Such an arrangement is particularly advantageous because, in this instance, only the disengagement of, for example, a pivotal motioninhibiting stop will be required in order to pivot and interchange the two supports including their respective sets of friction discs.
In order to make the invention more readily understood, it will now be described, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 is a front view of the preferred embodiment of friction false-twisting apparatus according to the invention, the apparatus being in operative position with the discs in one overlapping order and sequence and with the two pivotable sets being arranged in a respective one of two identical pivotal supports; Figure 2 is a top view of the false-twisting apparatus shown in Figure 1; Figure 3 is a top view of the false-twisting apparatus shown in Figures 1 and 2 with the pivotal supports and their pivotal sets in their midpivoted positions; Figure 4 is a top view of the false-twisting apparatus with the pivotal supports and sets in their fully pivoted positions; and Figure 5 is a front view of the false-twisting apparatus during the interchange of the sets of discs.
The friction false-twisting apparatus comprises, as Figures 1 and 2 illustrate, a mounting plate 1 fastened to a texturing machine's spindle bearing plate - not illustrated. Two identical supports 2 and 3, in each of which a set of friction discs 4 and 5 respectively including their respective spindles and bearings is rotatably mounted, are pivotally arranged on the plate 1. A third set 6 of friction discs is secured directly to the mounting plate 1.
In order to change from Z-twist to S-twist or vice versa, it is necessary to pivot the supports 2 and 3 via intermediate positions illustrated in Figure 3 in which, it should be noted, insertion of the yarn is easily possible -- at least into the positions shown in Figure 4. The supports 2 and 3 including the sets of friction discs 4 and 5 may in these positions, in which the discs of the three sets no longer overlap, be removed from the plate 1 and be interchanged. The result of this interchange in conjunction with a change of the direction of rotation of the sets 4, 5 and 6 of the friction discs is that the discs of the three sets will be regrouped in correct order and sequence required for the change-over from one selected twist to the other.
The false-twisting apparatus will be ready again for operation once the supports 2 and 3 have been pivoted back and secured in their operative positions by means of screws 7.
Alternatively, it is possible instead of interchanging the supports 2 and 3 to interchange, after the outward pivotal motion, only the sets 4 and 5 of the friction discs together with their mountings 4' and 5' comprising the respective spindles and their bearings. Such an arrangement is preferable if in addition to changing from one selected twist to the other it is considered important that components, as for example the mountings 4' and 5', should in case of any damage to them be easily exchangeable. It is also possible, as shown on the top left-hand side of Figure 5, to remove in the outward pivotal positions any individual disc from any spindle and to replace it by a new one without having to remove the apparatus from the spindle rail and without having to interfere with any of the discs of the adjacent sets.
Although the invention has been described with reference to a false-twisting apparatus having 3 sets of friction discs arranged to form the corners of a triangle it should be understood that if an apparatus according to the invention comprises more than three spindles arranged in a quadrilateral or pentagonal polygon pivoting of the pivotable sets will be effected substantially in the same portion as herein before described with reference to the apparatus with 3 sets of spindles.
