Abstract
An automobile seat (12) for use by invalids, comprising a seat unit (13) which is supported on an hydraulic ram (15, 16) so that its level can be adjusted, said seat unit also being able to swivel about a swivel means (18) so that it can be turned to face outwardly of the vehicle, whereby said seat unit can be positioned to enable an invalid to transfer between the car seat and a wheel chair without being physically lifted. <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
Automobile seat for use by invalids
This invention relates to an automobile seat for use by invalids and to an automobile fitted with said seat.
An invalid in a wheel chair, unable to walk or carry his own weight on his legs, can usually only be transferred to an automobile with the assistance of a person or persons capable of lifting him bodily out of the wheel chair and lowering him into the automobile seat. If such a person is not available to assist the invalid, who may sometimes be very heavy and difficult to lift, the problem of transferring him to the automobile is severe. It is the object of the present invention to provide a solution to the problem of transferring an invalid from a wheel chair to an automobile.
According to the invention, there is provided an automobile seat for use by invalids, adapted to fit in place of a conventional passenger seat assembly adjacent a door, and comprising a base adapted to fit to the floor of the vehicle, an hydraulic ram upstanding from the base, said ram supporting a seat unit in such a manner that it can be raised and lowered relative to the base, and swivel means enabling said seat unit to be swivelled about a vertical axis relative to the base, in use to enable the seat unit to face outwardly of the open door at a level permitting an invalid to transfer from a wheel chair to the car seat without being physically lifted.
Preferably, the swivel means permits swivelling of the seat unit through an angle of not less than 90 degrees, and is lockable, at least in the front facing position of the seat unit. Said swivel means may be incorporated at any suitable level in the seat, e.g. at the base or, more desirably, between the seat unit and the upper member of the hydraulic ram.
The hydraulic ram is preferably operable from an hydraulic circuit incorporating a pump. Such pump may be a foot pump or the like, but in a preferred arrangement the pump is operable by an electric motor powered from the vehicle battery.
In this preferred arrangement, the pump drives the hydraulic ram through a solenoid restriction valve powered from the vehicle battery through "raise" and "lower" switches, the return side of said restriction valve being connected to an hydraulic reservoir for the pump.
The invention also relates to an automobile equipped with the above-described seat.
Figure 1 is a partial side view of an automobile fitted with the seat of the invention; and
Figure 2 shows a preferred drive and control system for the seat.
In Figure 1, the reference 10 designates an automobile, the front door 11 on the passenger side being open to show, mounted in place of the normal front passenger seat assembly, the seat 12 in accordance with the invention for use by an invalid.
The seat 12 comprises a seat unit 13 supported on a rest 14 carried on the upper member (cylinder) 15 of an hydraulic ram, the lower member (piston rod) 16 of which is fixed in an upstanding position relative to a base plate 17. The base plate 17 is fixed to the floor of the vehicle.
The upper member 15 of the hydraulic ram supports a surrounding sleeve 18 which can rotate about the member 15, enabling the seat unit 13 to be swivelled about a vertical axis. Stops (not shown) may limit the permissible swivelling of the seat unit 13 to an angle of not less than 90 degrees, thereby at least to permit the seat unit to turn from a front facing position to a position facing outwardly of the open vehicle door. In addition, locking means (not shown) are provided enabling the seat unit 13 to be locked in its front facing position, and possibly also in its side facing position.
In use, when an invalid is to transfer between the automobile and a wheel chair, the vehicle door 11 is opened and the wheel chair brought alongside the seat 12. The hydraulic ram is operated to bring the seat unit 13 level with the wheel chair, and said seat unit is swivelled to face at least partly towards the wheel chair through the open door. The invalid is then able to transfer, often substantially without assistance, as the need for physical lifting is effectively avoided.
When the invalid is seated in the seat 12 while the car is being driven, the ram mounted seat unit 13 affords a comfortable ride, at a level adjustable to suit the invalid's height and weight.
The seat 12 can be fitted in position, in place of a normal front passenger seat assembly without the need to alterthevehicle structurallyorto changethe existing interior layout or seating arrangement. In practice, the seat unit 13 may consist of the back and seat parts of the original passenger seat assembly, and existing seat belts can be used in the normal recommended manner.
Figure 2 shows a practical drive and control system for the hydraulic ram. It consists of an hydraulic circuit including a fluid reservoir 20, a pump 21 drivable by a motor 22 powered from the vehicle battery connected to terminals 23, and a solenoid operable restriction valve 24 connected between the pump 21 and the hydraulic ram 15, 16. The fluid connection between the restriction valve 24 and the ram 15, 16 is shown at 25. One end of this fluid connection 25 is also shown in Figure 1, wherein the reference 26 designates a bleed valve. Referring again to Figure 2, the reference 27 indicates a breather pipe. The solenoid operable restriction valve 24 is also powered from the vehicle battery, and the switches 28 are selectively closable to effect gradual raising and lowering of the seat unit 13, as required. When a previously closed switch 28 is opened, the seat unit 13 remains supported by the ram 15, 16 in a chosen position of level adjustment.
It will be appreciated that various modifications of the above-described arrangement are possible within the scope of the invention. For example, a simple hydraulic foot pump may be employed to

control the ram, in conjunction with suitable locking means, while the necessary swivelling of the seat unit can be achieved by swivel means provided at the base of the seat or even within the structure of the hydraulic ram.
