Abstract

In a concrete cutting machine having a chassis 10, land wheels 14, 15 on which the chassis can be moved over a surface to be cut, a cutting means 12 and a prime mover 11 for said cutting means, the machine is manually propelled by an operator who walks alongside the machine and rocks a hand lever 21 up and down to drive the rear wheels 14. As shown the lever 21 actuates a spring-loaded chain 23 to oscillate an input sprocket of a one-way clutch 24 to transmit an intermittent drive to the wheels 14 through disengageable belt gearing 28. In a modification the belt gearing is replaced by disengageable friction gearing (figs 2-4, not shown). The chain and sprocket drive 23 may be replaced by a rack and pinion. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Improvements In and Relating To Cutting Machines This invention relates to concrete cutting machines.
The cutting of flat concrete surfaces is often carried out by using a cutting machine comprising a wheeled chassis which mounts a prime mover and a cutting wheel. In use the machine is moved over the surface to be cut so that the required cut is made by the rotating cutting wheel. It is known to provide a power drive for movement of the machine and this can be a variable speed drive whereby the chassis can be moved at a rate which is suitable for the equipment and concrete being cut. In view of the high cost involved a power drive is usually only incorporated with the larger of cutting machines as the smaller models are usually manually pushed by the operator.
Problems, however, arise when pushing the cutting machine as it is not only difficult to push but the operator must exert such a force that it is often difficult to gauge the amount of distance the machine is being or should be moved. In addition, the operator must position himself behind the machine to be able to achieve the necessary purchase, but by doing so he cannot at the same time see how and on which line the cut is proceeding.
The object of the present invention is to provide a concrete cutting machine which has a simple, effective and inexpensive drive means whereby the machine can be moved over a surface to be cut.
Broadly, the invention provides a concrete cutting machine comprising a chassis, land wheels on which the chassis can be moved over a surface to be cut, a cutting means, a prime mover for said cutting means and a drive means whereby the chassis can be moved over the surface to be cut said drive means comprising a pivoted lever which is formed to one side of the pivot as a handle, a drive transfer means forming part of a drive train to at least one of said land wheels and means coupling said lever at the other side of said pivot to translate movement of the lever into drive of the transfer means, said transfer means being of a type where drive to the drive train is only imparted when the lever is pivotted in one direction about said pivot.
In the following more detailed description of the invention reference will be made to the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is a side elevational view of one form of the machine according to the invention showing the main constructional features of the machine, Figure 2 is a longitudinal cross-sectional view of drive means according to a second form of the invention, Figure 3 is a transverse cross-section taken on line B-B of figure 2, Figure 4 is a transverse cross-section taken one line C-C of Figure 2, and Figure 5 is an elevational view of the drive means of figure 2 showing it in relation to the driven wheels of the machine.
The machine as generally shown in figure 1 comprises a chassis 10 mounting a prime mover 11, such as a petrol driven engine, which is coupled to a cutting wheel 12 located partially within a cover 13. The chassis 10 is mounted at the rear end on land wheels 14. The forward land wheels 15 are mouted on a sub-frame 16 which is pivotted at 1 6a toward the rear of the chassis 10.A threaded shaft 1 7 is engaged in a threaded opening in a fixture 18, said fixture 1 8 being carried on an upright 1 9 which extends from chassis 10, and has its free end pivotally coupled at 1 7a to sub-frame 1 6. Accordingly, the position of the front land wheels 1 5 relative to the chassis 10 can be adjusted by turning the shaft 17 and thus raise or lower the rear end 1 6b of sub-frame 16.
This brief description of the basic construction of the machine covers the main construction which is already known in the art. Further description of the ancillary equipment and workings of the machine is thus not required.
Pivotally coupled to the top end of upright 19 is a lever 20 which to one side of the pivot is formed as a handle 21 and to the other side an arm 22 which is coupled to a chain 23. This chain 23 extends downwardly to engage about the sprocket of a conventional sprag clutch 24. The other end of chain 23 is coupled by a spring 25 to a fixture 26 extending from upright 19.
Sprag clutch 24 is carried by a suitable flange 27 mounted by upright 19 and is so mounted that its position can be adjusted to ensure that correct tension in V belt 28 can be maintained. This V belt 28 extends from a pulley wheel mounted by said sprag clutch 24 to a pulley wheel (not shown) on one of the rear land wheels 14 or alternatively the axle of one or both wheels 14.
In use the operator positions himself such that he can grasp handle 21 and push it downwardly in the direction shown by the arrow. This movement is imparted by chain 23 as a drive in sprag clutch 24 and the drive is in turn transmitted to wheel(s) 14 by the drive train of the pulley wheels and V belt 28. At the bottom or extent of its travel handle 21 is allowed to pivot up under the influence of spring 25, this movement being permitted by the free wheeling of sprag clutch 24. When reversing of the machine is required, a lever (not shown) is used to move the sprag clutch or its mounting such that tension in belt 28 is relieved thus allowing wheels 24 to rotate in reverse.
The machine is open to modification and alteration within the scope of the invention. For example, chain 23 could be replaced by a toothed rack which extends from portion 22 of lever 20. In such an arrangement a pinion on sprag clutch 24 would engage with the rack. A further modification would be to replace sprag clutch 24 with a ratchet. To alter the gearing the point of attachment of chain 23 to lever portion 22 can be moved in relation to the pivot axis of lever 20.
A further form of the invention is shown in figures 2 to 5. In this form wheels 14 are each driven by being in frictional contact with a respective driver wheel 30a and 30b mounted each end of a common drive shaft 31. This shaft 31 is mounted for rotation with a cylindrical housing 32 which is pivotally mounted to pillars 19' (figure 5) by a pair of arms 33. Driver wheel 30a is mounted to shaft 31 by a drive plate 34 and sprag clutch 24 is located within the hollow interior of driver wheel 30a. A sprocket 35 is mounted on sprag clutch 24 and is located with a vertically disposed housing 36.
The lower end of housing 36 is mounted on a support arm 36a which has a bush 37 at its end.
A bolt 38 passing through bush 37 engages in a tapped bore 39 of a projection 40 extending from mounting arm 33.
Referring to figure 4 the housing has two hollow interior portions 41 and 42. Chain 23 is mounted by one end via spring 25 to an end cover plate 43. The other end of chain 23 is coupled to the inner end of a plunger 44 which is slidingly located in the second portion 42. The outer end of plunger 44 is provided with a boss 45 which permits pivotal coupling of the end of a link 51 extending from arm 22 of lever 20. Chain 23 passes around sprocket 35 of sprag clutch 24.
The drive means operates in the same manner as previously described. As lever 20 is moved the plunger 44 is drawn in the direction of arrow A which imparts a drive via sprag clutch 24 to shaft 31 and thereby to driver wheels 30a and 30b which are in contact with wheels 14.
Means are provided to disengage driver wheels 30a and 30b from land wheels 14 and these can take different forms. For example a pair of spaced apart bosses 46 can be welded to cylindrical housing 32 to pivotally mount, by a bolt or shaft 47 passing therethrough, the end of a link 48.
Bolt or shaft 47 is coupled to a spring 49 which is coupled by its free end to a location on the machine. The free end of link 48 is coupled to a lever 50 pivotally mounted by one of pillars 19' so that by moving lever 50 via a control lever (not shown) housing 32 can be lifted away from wheels 14 and held there by a simple over centre locking action provided by the suitable location of lever 50 and spring 49 relative to the pivot axis of bolt or shaft 47.
This form of drive provides extra control as the friction wheel can easily turn the land wheel 14 but wheel 14 cannot readily turn the friction wheel. Accordingly, the drive tends to hold the land wheel and govern progress of the machine.
This prevents the diamond blade from itself pulling the machine along especially when going down hill.
The drive means thus provides a simple, effective and inexpensive way in which an operator can move the machine over a surface to be cut. He is able to position himself to one side of the machine rather than directly behind and so is able to see exactly the amount and direction of the cut. The operator is also able to control movement without undue exertion and can better sense the amount of advancement of the blade which can be made depending on the nature of the concrete being cut, the grade of blade being used and other variables.

Claims (16)

Claims
1. A concrete cutting machine comprising a chassis, land wheels on which the chassis can be moved over a surface to be cut, a cutting means, a prime mover for said cutting means and a drive means whereby the chassis can be moved over the surface to be cut, said drive means comprising a pivotted lever which is formed to one side of the pivot as a handle, a drive transfer means forming part of a drive train to at least one of said land wheels and means coupling said lever at the other side of said pivot to translate movement of the lever into drive of the transfer means, said transfer means being of a type where drive to the drive train is only imparted when the lever is pivotted in one direction about said pivot.
2. The machine according to claim 1 wherein the drive transfer means has an imput which is mounted for rotation and is in mechanical engagement with said coupling means, said drive transfer means further having an output which is coupled to said input via engagement means which impart drive to the output only during rotation of the input in one direction, said output being drivingly engaged with at least one of said land wheels.
3. The machine according to claim 1 wherein the coupling means is an elongate member coupled at one end to said lever and mechanically engagable throughout at least part of its length with said input.
4. The machine according to claim 3 wherein the elongate member is a chain and said input is a sprocket, said chain being coupled at its other end via resilient means to a fixture.
5. The machine according to claim 3 wherein the elongate member is a toothed rack and said input is a pinion wheel.
6. The machine according to any one of claims 2 to 5 wherein the output of the drive transfer, means is coupled via a drive belt, chain or the like to a drive wheel or sprocket coupled to said at least one land wheel or the axle of said land wheel.
7. The machine according to any one of claims, 2 to 5 wherein the output of the drive transfer means is coupled to a drive wheel which is in frictional engagement with said at least one land wheel.
8. The machine according to claim 7 wherein the drive wheel is mounted by a shaft to a second drive wheel which is in frictional engagement with a land wheel.
9. The machine according to any one of preceding claims 1 to 8 wherein the drive transfer means comprises a sprag clutch.
10. The machine according to any one of preceding claims 1 to 8 wherein a drive transfer means comprises a ratchet drive.
11. The machine according to any one of preceding claims 1 to 10 wherein the point at which the coupling means is attached to the lever at said other side of said pivot is adjustable such that the distance between the point of attachment and the pivot can be varied.
12. The machine according to claim 6 wherein means are provided to disengage the drive between said drive transfer means and said at least one wheel.
13. The machine according to claim 7 or 8 wherein means are provided to disengage said drive wheel or wheels from frictional engagement with the respective land wheel or wheels.
14. The machine according to claim 6 wherein the drive belt, chain or the like is located within a housing, the end which is coupled to said lever being attached to a plunger which is slidingly located with part of said housing, said plunger being coupled via a link to said lever.
1 5. The machine according to any one of the preceding claims wherein the lever is pivotted to a pillar projecting upwardly from said chassis, the drive transfer means being also mounted by said pillar at a location between said chassis and said lever pivot.
16. The machine according to claim 15 wherein land wheels are located at or adjacent the lower end of said pillar, the drive transfer means being so mounted that it can be pivotted in relation to said land wheels to effect disengagement of drive to the land wheel(s).
