Abstract

Perylene vat dyes are produced by treating perylene quinone with chlorine. A chlorine addition product is first formed, which, on treatment with agents fixing hydrochloric acid, is transformed into a chloroperylene quinone. According to the examples, (1) a suspension of perylene quinone in nitrobenzene is heated with chlorine in the presence of a trace of iodine; the chlorine addition product formed is precipitated by the addition of light petroleum and is recrystallized from nitrobenzene; (2) the chlorine addition product of the preceding example, dissolved if desired in nitrobenzene, is boiled with aniline; on cooling, chloroperylene quinone separates out; it dyes cotton greenish yellow from a cherry red vat. The colours obtained by the use of the chlorine addition product are not so fast towards chemical reagents as those of the chloroperylene quinone.
