Description

SPECIFICATION Brush holder for electrical machines The invention relates to a brush holder in which a brush housing is provided on one side of a mounting plate and an electrical assembly is attached to the other side.
In a known brush holder as descirbed in German Patent specification (Offenlegungsschrift) No. 28 30 338, openings are provided in the mounting plate for the connections, designed as contact pins, of a voltage regulator are only acessible from the two sides of the mounting plate. In the case of this arrangement, fixed contacts, which are located on the mounting plate, are not connected to the contact pins of the voltage regulator prior to its being attached to the mounting plate because, otherwise, the fixed contacts would have to be passed through the openings in the mounting plate. However, this would occasion openings of too large a size in the mounting plate because, as a rule, the fixed contacts are designed as stamped and multi-curved sheetmetal parts having protruding soldering tabs and the like.In this known brush holder, therefore, the contact pins of the voltage regulator are only connected electrically to the fixed contacts when the voltage regulator is attached to the mounting plate.
For this purpose, the fixed contacts are connected to contact lugs or the iike which are disposed coaxially with the contact pins of the voltage regulator and automatically engage therewith with the attachment ofthe voltage regulator. However, such snap connections are liable to become faulty and are no longer guaranteed safe, especially if the voltage regulator is replaced.
The present invention resides in a brush holder for an electrical machine, comprising a housing for brushes and a mounting plate adapted to be secured to the machine housing and having said housing on one side thereof and an electrical assembly secured to its other side with connections of the electrical assembly passing through openings in the mounting plate and are connected to fixed contacts on the mounting plate, the mounting plate having at least one edge recess which intersects the openings for the connections of the electrical assembly and enables them to be introduced into said openings from the edge of the mounting plate.
The connections of the electrical assembly, such as a voltage regulator, can thereby be connected to fixed contacts of any shape, e.g. by welding, prior to its being fitted to the mounting plate, without the openings in the mounting plate for passing the connections therethrough having to be adapted to the shape of the fixed contacts.
In the case of electrical machines, wherein a dustproof chamber is to be formed which encloses the brushes and sliprings, and also, possibly, the adjacent shaft bearing, it is advantageous for a closure piece to be inserted into the edge recess or into each of the edge recesses of the mounting plate and this closure piece forms a smooth, stepless transition between the two edge regions of the mounting plate which each adjoin a respective recess.
The consequence of this is that a sealing element can be disposed on the edge of the brush holder so as to be supported all-round and said sealing element seals the installation opening of the machine housing for the parts of the brush holder which penetrate the inside of said housing.
In one particularly advantageous embodiment, the mounting plate of the brush holder has, on its brush housing side, a hub-like raised portion which is adapted to the profile of the installation opening of the machine housing and carries, on its periphery, a sealing element which abuts the wall of the installation opening when the mounting plate is secured to the outside of the machine housing. The sealing element is preferably an O-ring inserted into an endless groove ofthe hub-like raised portion.
In this case the sealing element may be designed simply and in such a way that in practice it does not prevent the brush holder from being installed in the housing of the electrical machine.
The invention is further described, by way of example, with reference to the drawings, in which Figure 1 is a elevation of a brush holder with a mounted voltage regulator, viewed from the side of the housing for the brushes, Figure 2 is an end elevation of the brush holder of Figure 1, viewed in the direction of arrow A of Figure 1, and Figure 3 is a section along the line Ill-Ill in Figure 1.
The brush holder shown in the drawings has a mounting plate 10, on one side of which is moulded a housing 12 fortwo brushes 14 and 16 which are intended to engage slip rings of an electrical machine, such as a generator for installation in a motor vehicle. Secured on the other side of the mounting plate 10 by means of two rivets 22 is an electronic voltage regulator 18 with the interposition of a heat sink 20. The heat sink 20 is provided with four angular tabs 24 which are distributed uniformly over the periphery of the housing of the voltage regulator 18 and which dissipate the heat from the mounting plate 10 to the surrounding atmoshphere.
The voltage regulator 18 has three electrical connections, two of which are designed as contact pins 26,27 and one of which is designed as a contact strip 28 (Figure 2). The contact pins 26 and 27 pass through openings 30 in the mounting plate 10 with some clearance and are connected to fixed contacts 32 and 34 at their free ends. These fixed contacts are formed by stamped multi-angular sheet-metal parts and firmly riveted to brackets 36, 38 which are moulded on the mounting plate 10 as a one-piece construction at opposite sides of the housing 12. The contact pins 26, 27 are securely connected to the fixed contacts 32 and 34 by welding prior to the mounting of the voltage regulator 18.
The contact strip 28 passes through an opening 40 in the mounting plate 10 with some clearance and forms, at its free end, a contact plate 42 which covers the opening at the rear end of a continuous guide channel 44 found in the brush housing 12 forthe brush 16. A flexible tail 46 of the brush 16 is soldered to the contact plate 42 which supports a compression spring 48 acting on the brush. So that this spring cannot press the contact plate 42 away outwardly, a projection 52 is moulded on the edge 50 of the housing 12 which surrounds the opening at the rear end of the guide channel 44 and said projection engages externally with the contact plate 42. Two bores 53, which are lined by metallic bushes, are also provided in the mounting plate 10 for securing the brush holder on the external wall of the machine housing in the region of an insert opening.
In order to enable the voltage regulator 18, already connected to the fixed contacts 32 and 34, to be mounted on the mounting plate 10, the mounting plate 10 is provided with an edge recess 54 which extends from the lower edge 56 of the mounting plate 10 and reaches the openings 30 and 40 for the connections of the voltage regulator 18. A closure piece 58 is inserted into the edge recess 54 and forms a smooth, stepless transition between the two lower edge regions 60 and 62 which adjoin the edge recess 54. The openings 30 and 40 in the mounting plate 10 are formed by recesses in the leading edge faces, which face one another, of the mounting plate 10 proper and the inserted closure piece 58.So that the closure piece 58 is accurately guided in the edge recess 54 of the mounting plate 10, the closure piece 58 is provided on its leading edge faces with a groove 66 (Figure 3) in which a tenon-like projection 68 engages on the facing edge face of the mounting plate 10.
When the voltage regulator 18 is mounted on the mounting plate 10, the closure piece 58 is not yet inserted into the edge recess 54. The voltage regulator 18 is first of ali brought onto the mounting plate 10 tilted at an angle so that the contact plate 42 is pushed underneath the projection 52 on the housing 12. Afterwards, the voltage regulator 18 is tilted back into its prescribed position on the mounting plate and firmly riveted thereto. Then the closure piece 58 is inserted into the edge recess 54 of the mounting plate 10 and secured there in a suitable manner, e.g.
by means of adhesive. In many cases, it is sufficient for the closure piece 58 to be secured by friction contact with the mounting plate.
Because of the disposition of the edge recess 54, the openings 30 and 40 in the mounting plate 10 do not need to be adapted to the shape of the fixed contacts 32 and 34 and of the contact plate 42, but only to the cross-section of the connecting parts 26, 27,28 of the voltage regulator 18 and of contact tabs 64 of the fixed contacts 32 and 34 extending- into the region of the holes 30.
At its side on which the housing 12 is formed, the mounting plate 10 has a hub-like raised portion 72 which is adapted to the profile of the installation opening in the machine housing and protrudes into this installation opening with little clearance when the mounting plate is mounted. The hub-like raised portion 72 is also formed on the closure piece 58 of the mounting plate 10 so that, after the closure piece has been inserted into the mounting plate 10, the hub-like raised portion 72 has an uninterruped circumferential edge. A rubber-elastic O-ring 76 is located in an endless groove 74 in the circumferential edge of the raised portion 72 and abuts the wall of the installation opening of the machine housing under slight initial stress when the mounting plate 10 is mounted. In this way, the installation opening is sealed by a simple and proven means which, in practice, does not prevent the brush holder from being inserted or pivoted into the installation opening. Prior to the mounting of the ready-assembled brush holder on the machine housing, the O-ring 76 may serve as an additional means for ensuring that the closure piece 58 does not fall out of the edge recess 54 of the mouting plate 10.
The invention may also be successfully realised with those brush holders which comprise, instead of a voltage regulator, some other form of electrical assembly or a connecting device for a separatelymounted voltage regulator or for some other separately-mounted electrical assembly.
