Abstract

The injection pump and injection nozzle unit 2 associated with an engine cylinder is housed in a chamber 11 with a centrifugal governor 9 for regulating the injection pump. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION A regulating device for a compression ignition engine The invention relates to a regulating device for a compression-ignition engine, and is particularly concerned with such a device for a compression ignition, in which the injection pump and the ignition engine, in which the injection pump and the injection nozzle form a unit associated with an engine cylinder, a centrifugal governor is provided formed by the injection pump and the injection nozzle is or are disposed in a receiving chamber inside a housing.
The regulation of an injection pump, which is mounted on the cylinder head of the engine in the usual manner, is effected by means of a displaceable or rotatable governor rod into which centrifugal weights engage by way of a springloaded sleeve. In known arrangements the governor is mounted on the engine as a separate element and engagement of the governor rod is effected at a point outside the chamber in which the injection nozzles are disposed. The governor must, therefore, be lubricated separately and care must be taken to avoid friction in the governor.
According to the invention, there is provided a regulating device for a compression-ignition engine, in which an injection pump and an injection nozzle form a unit associated with an engine cylinder, a centrifugal governor is provided for regulating the pump, and the unit or units formed by the injection pump and the injection nozzle is or are disposed in receiving chamber inside a housing, wherein the centrifugal governor is also disposed in the said receiving chamber.
The governor is, therefore, disposed in a chamber filled with oil vapour or oil mist, so as to reliably prevent the governor from running unlubricated. Only an actuating lever for fuel injection control and, possibly an injection timing device are taken through to the outside from the housing in which the governor and the injection pump are disposed.
Advantageously, means are provided for drivingly connecting the centrifugal governor to the engine cam shaft, said means being disposed in said receiving chamber.
The invention will now be more particularly described with reference to the accompanying drawing which is a section in the direction of the axis of an engine cylinder through a unit formed by an injection pump and an injection nozzle and through a housing accommodating a centrifugal governor.
A pump nozzle element 2 is disposed in a cylinder head 1. The element 2 is driven by a rocker arm 3 mounted on a shaft 4 and having a cam follower 5 which cooperates with a camshaft 6. The camshaft 6 also actuates the valves of the engine by way of cup-shaped push rods 7. A centrifugal governor has a shaft 9 disposed in a lateral recess 10 of a pump receiving chamber 11.
The recess 10 communicates with the chamber 11 through a transition region 12. The pump is regulated by governor rods 13 and 14, the governor rod 13 altering the fuel injection and the governor rod 14 controlling when injection commences. A component passing to the outside, e.g. a fuel injection lever 15, allows the fuel injection to be altered during operation.
The centrifugal governor is driven from the camshaft 6 by a drive mechanism comprising toothed wheels, a toothed belt, a chain of a V-belt (not shown). The drive mechanism is also disposed in the chamber 11.
The chamber 11 is filled with oil vapour or oil mist, so that all parts are lubricated simultaneously. The mounting of the governor on the cylinder head reduces the space occupied by the governor to a minimum.
1. A regulating device for a compressionignition engine, in which an injection pump and an injection nozzle form a unit associated with an engine cylinder, a centrifugal governor is provided for regulating the pump, and the unit or units formed by the injection pump and the injection nozzle is or are disposed in a receiving chamber inside a housing, wherein the centrifugal governor is also disposed in said receiving chamber.
2. A regulating device as claimed in claim 1, wherein means are provided for drivingly connecting the centrifugal governor to the engine cam shaft, said means being disposed in said receiving chamber.
3. A regulating device for a compressionignition engine, substantially as hereinbefore described, with reference to, and as shown in, the accompanying drawing.
4. A compression-ignition engine, comprising an injection pump and an injection nozzle formed as a unit associated with an engine cylinder, a centrifugal governor for regulating the injection pump, the unit and the governor being disposed in a common receiving chamber.
5. A compression-ignition engine as claimed in claim 4, wherein means are provided for drivingly connecting the centrifugal governor to the engine cam shaft, said means being disposed in said receiving chamber.
6. A compression-ignition engine substantially as hereinbefore described, with reference to, and as shown in, the accompanying drawing.
