Description
SPECIFICATION
Method for avoiding blocking of temporarily closed metal pouring vessels, and equipment suitable therefor
This invention relates to a new method for avoiding blocking of the outlet of a metal pouring vessel when such outlet is temporarily closed by means of a refractory gate, as well as to suitable equipment for such method.
More in particular the invention concerns an improved method in which the liquid metal staying in the outlet of the vessel, when such outlet is closed by the relatively much colder refractory plate, is kept in motion, so as to avoid the formation of a crust of solidified metal due to cooling of the molten metal.
There is presently known such a method for keeping the molten metal in constant motion in which an inert gas is blown into the molten metal staying in the vessel outlet, through a porous insert in the refractory gate. Such technique has however considerable drawbacks in that it requires the provision of gas conducts through and connections of gas conducts to said gate.
Handling of such equipment has shown very cumbersome and has therefore not proven quite satisfactcry.
In accordance with this invention, there has now been developed a new method for avoiding blocking ofthe outlet of a metal pouring vessel, which method avoids the drawbacks of the known systems.
According to this new method, blocking of the outlet of the pouring vessel, when temporarily closed by means of a refractory gate, is avoided by providing said refractory gate, on at least a part of its closing surface with a material yielding a substantial gas release when coming into contact with, or close to the hot molten metal in the outlet of the pouring vessel.
In a preferred embodimsnt of the invention, said gas yielding material may, in particular be provided in the form of an insert part fitting in a corresponding cavity in the refractory gate.
According to a further feature of the invention such gas yielding material may suitably be made up of or comprise a component which decomposes thermically with formation of at least one gas.
According to a still further feature such thermically decomposing component may very appropriately decompose through an exothermic reaction.
In such case, the solidification of the molten metal staying in the closed outlet will not only be achieved keeping said molten metal in motion, but the heath released by said exothermic reaction will also contrlbute to avoid formation of a crust of solidified metal.
In an other or further embodiment of the invention the gas yielding material may also be impregnated with a gas or with a gas yielding component.
According to a very appropriate embodiment of the invention, the gas yielding material may in
particular consist of a material traded under the
name "PTFE". (polytetrafluoroethylene).
It is clear of course that the gases released bv
the gas releasing material, should in accordance
with the invention, most conveniently be
substantially inert with respect to the molten
metal, in order to avoid introducing undesirable
impurities in the (molten) metal.
The invention on the other hand, also provides for suitable equipment for avoiding the blocking of
closed outlet of a metal pouring vessel.
In accordance with the invention, there is thus
provided a new type of refractory plate for a gate device on a metal pouring vessel, able to create
gas bubbling in the molten metal at the outlet of said vessel. When it is used for temporarily closing said outlet, which refractory plate has at least a part of its closing surface made up of a material yielding a substantial gas release when coming into contact with or close to hot molten metal.
In a preferred embodiment of such refractory plate according to the invention, it comprises an insert plug of gas yielding material, which is provided in a corresponding cavity in its closing surface.
According to a preferred feature of the invention, such insert plug may suitably be made of a material with a component which decomposes thermically with formation of at least one gas.
According to an other or further feature of the invention, said insert plug may in particular consist of the material called "PTFE".
The invention will further be explained hereafter through the description of a specific embodiment of the invention, given by way of puriVy illustrative example. In this description referencelis made to the attached drawing, which represents: - a section view of the outlet of a metal pour vessel, provided with a closing gate in accordance with the invention.
The figure shows the outlet part of a metal pouring vessel, generally designated by the reference numeral 1, with its refractory outlet parts 2, its shell 3 and its refractory outlet plate 4 (so called upper plate), having a pouring aperture 5.
The figure further shows a slide gate in accordance with the invention, consisting of a refractory plate 6 (so called lower plate), which is movably provided in front of the outlet so as to allow pouring of molten metal, by bringing an aperture 7 of the plate 6, in front of the aperture 5 of the upper plate 4.
When closing the outlet by bringing the plate 6 in the position represented in the figure, an insert plug 8, consisting of "PTFE" material, provided in a corresponding cavity 9 of the refractory material of said plate 6, comes in contact with the hot molten metal.
As a consequence, the "PTFE" material will start releasing gas, which will bubble up in the molten metal staying in the outlet, thus keeping said metal in motion to avoid blocking of the outlet.
The gas release should of course continue as long as the closure of the outlet is required. The total gas yielding capacity of the insert plug must therefore be foreseen at least sufficient to last the longest probably closing time of the outlet, in normal use.
The insert plug may in such case be so provided that it is easily replaceable, being intended to be used once only.
It should be emphasized that the invention is by no means limited to the above description of specific embodiments thereof and that numerous developments of said invention will be apparent to the skilled art worker, withbut leaving the general outline of the following claims.
