Description

SPECIFICATION Process and apparatus for coating band material by means of a spreading roller The subject of the present invention is a process for coating band material on one side with a liquid or pasty substance, in particular with a solvent-based coating, so that a scraper blade is fitted against a rotary spreading roller and the band material is guided so as to pass by the spreading roller so that the band material contacts the spreading roller, and coating substance is passed to above the scraper blade, into a trough formed by the mantle of the spreading roller and by the scraper blade, whereby the direction of rotation of the spreading roller is such that the surface of the spreading roller moves downwards at the contact point between the spreading roller and the scraper blade.Another subject of the present invention is an apparatus for the implementation of the process, which apparatus comprises a spreading roller and a scraper blade fitted in contact with the roller as well as means for passing coating substance onto the scraper blade into the trough formed by the mantle of the spreading roller and by the scraper blade.
There are several known processes and devices for silicone coating of films and papers. One known process is the so-called rod coating, in which the coating roller rotates as partly submerged into a basin of coating substance and the band to be coated is passed between the coating roller and a counter-roller of rubber, fitted above the coating roller, while the coating substance is transferred from the coating roller onto the bottom face of the band. In order that the coating substance should rise with the coating roller as an appropriately thin layer, its viscosity must be relatively low, owing to which its dry-material content may be only 3 to 8 per cent. It is also possible to use a screen-surfaced coating roller. The excess of coating substance may be removed from the coating roller by using a scraper blade, i.e. doctor blade, fitted in contact with the roller.
So-called counter-roller coating is also known, in which any extra coating substance is wiped off from the coating roller by means of a counter-roller fitted alongside the coating roller and rotating in the same direction with the latter. In so-called 4-roller and 3-roller coating processes even more rollers may be fitted side by side and/or one on top of the other.
In air-brush coating any extra coating substance is removed from the surface of the band by means of air-blowing.
In all of the methods described above, the band material runs above the spreading roller in contact with the roller, and the coating substance is transferred onto the bottom face of the band. The transfer of the substance takes place from below upwards, in which case the substance must be readily flowing.
In order that the coating substance layer could be made sufficiently viscous, very high quantities of solvent must be used, even 95 to 97% of the quantity of the paste to be applied. During the manufacturing process, the solvent must be evaporated. Since, expressly in connection with silicone coating, as solvents are used toxic aromatic hydrocarbons, such as toluene, methylketone, benzene, hexane, etc., abundant quantities of solvent vapours cause risks both in the fire security and in the field of work hygiene. Moreover, large quantities of solvents require a lot of drying energy, because the drying air must not include solvents even nearly as explosive quantities. The hot drying air must be ventilated out and it must be replaced by heated replacement air taken into the factory hall.
In the most recent, so-called dry-silicone-coating process it has been possible to lower the quantities of solvents essentially. A drawback of that process is, however, the hydrogen produced by various catalysts, which hydrogen causes the risk of explosion in connection with disturbances in airconditioning.
The process in accordance with the present invention is characterized in that the band material is passed into contact with the spreading roller outside the trough formed by the spreading roller and by the scraper blade, whereby the coating substance is, in a way in itself known, transferred from the spreading roller onto the surface of the band material running in contact with the spreading roller.
The apparatus in accordance with the present invention is characterized in that it comprises means for passing the band material into contact with the spreading roller outside the trough formed by the spreading roller and by the scraper blade.
The process can be used for coating and treating various plastics and paper films. The apparatus is particularly suitable for silicone-coating of paper and film, but by its means it is also possible to apply other similar liquid, solvent-based coating substances, such as PVC, hot-jointing and coating varnishes etc. In the process in accordance with the invention, the solvent quantity in the paste to be applied can be reduced essentialiy, even down to 50%. Moreover, the process does not require methylketone or toluene as solvent, but as a solvent, e.g., the less toxic hexane is adequate.
The low quantities of solvent reduce the quantity of drying energy, reduce the cost of the coating, and the equipment does not necessarily require a recovery and burning plant for solvent vapours.
Despite the high dry-material content of the coating, by means of the apparatus it is possible to achieve very low quantities of coating substance per square metre of film to be coated. In trial runs of the apparatus, even coating quantities of 0.2 grams per square metre have been achieved.
Since the apparatus in accordance with the invention has a simple construction, its purchase price and operating costs are more advantageous than those of other methods.
The invention will be described more closely below with reference to the attached drawing, which is a schematical side view of an apparatus in accordance with the invention.
The apparatus includes a rotary hard-chromiumplated spreading roller 4, whose surface has received special treatment, e.g. sand-blasting, screenformation, or spark-treatment, and whose rate of revolution in relation to the speed of the band material (10) can be adjusted continuously. The roller has a proportionally adjusted drive, i.e. its speed in relation to the speed of the band web remains at the pre-set proportion.
An oscillating scraper blade 2 has been fitted in contact with the roller 4, which blade has been positioned diagonally so that its edge facing away from the roller is located higher than the edge in contact with the roller. In this way a trough remains between the roller and the blade, which trough forms a basin 11 for the paste to be applied. The scraper consists of a frame la a blade 2, and of a fastening 3 for the blade. The load of the scraper blade against the spreading roller can be adjusted continuously by means of a load F directed at the lever arm 5.
Above the paste basin 11 there is a supply tank 7 for the paste, from which the paste is supplied into the trough between the roller 4 and the blade 2 onto the upper face of the blade 2. By means of the circulation equipment for the paste to be applied, the paste is passed onto the blade 2 by pumping or by any other means. From here any excess paste flows as overflow from both ends of the scraper means back to the pumping basin (not shown in the drawing).
The apparatus additionally includes two guide rollers 8 and 9, which can be adjusted continuously and by means of which the angle of contact 10 and the time of contact of the web to be coated against the spreading roller is adjusted. In the drawing, another position of the rollers 8 and 9 and of the web 10 is shown by broken lines, in which position the contact angle is smaller.
When the apparatus is in operation, the spreading roller4 rotates in the direction shown in the drawing by the arrow A so that at the point of contact between the roller and the scraper blade 2 the face of the roller moves downwards and takes coating substance from the trough 11 through the slot between the roller 4 and the scraper blade 2 to underneath the scraper blade 2. The band material lotto be coated is passed below the spreading roller 4 in the direction shown by the arrows B, and the coating substance is transferred onto the band material while the material rubs against the roller.
The direction of movement of the band material is at the contact point with the roller parallel to the face of the roller, and the speed of movement of the material is preferably somewhat higher than the speed of the face of the roller. In the transfer of the substance onto the dosage roller 4, the gravity is utilized, and the evenness of the surface of the coating layer is achieved when the band passes underneath the spreading roller while rubbing. The guiding ofthe band material takes place by means of the guide rollers 8 and 9, without using a counterroller placed against the spreading roller.
The running speeds both of the spreading roller 4 and of the band material 10 can be adjusted. By changing the ratio of the speeds it is possible to adjust the quantity of the silicone coating per unit of area. Moreover, the quantity of coating can also be adjusted by changing the surface of contact of the film to be coated against the spreading roller, by means of the guide rollers 8 and 9, or by changing the blade pressure of the scraper. The type of the surface treatment of the spreading roller also affects the thickness of the coating layer.
The invention is not restricted to the embodiment described above alone, but it may vary even considerably within the scope of the patent claims. The process can be used for coating all sorts of band materials with various liquid or pasty coating substances.
