Abstract

The processing of tobacco stems in cigarette making has been complicated in the past because of the structural dissimilarity of the rod-like stems in comparison with the laminar portions of the tobacco leaf. This invention provides a solution to this problem by a process for shredding tobacco stems so they are structurally compatible with the laminar portions of the tobacco leaf. The process comprises the shredding of tobacco stems by splitting or parting the stems along the grain to produce light, pliable, low bulk density fibrillar shreds. Stems shredded according to the present process exhibit sufficient resiliency so that when massed they approximate or exceed the filling capacity of cut leaf shreds. Apparatus utilizing blunt rotatable blade-like elements (20 or 34) are also disclosed.
