Abstract
A hollow pin, formed from a folded sheet metal blank, has, integral with one end of the pin, a cradle 2 for reception of a bare end of a cable conductor. A collar 3, having a tapped hole 4 for a clamping screw 5, is fitted around the cradle 2 and the screw is advanced to clamp the bare end of a conductor, against the internal surface of the cradle. The axis of the cradle may, if desired, lie approximately normal to the axis of the plug pin (Figures 2 and 3, not shown). <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
An electrically conductive plug pin
This invention relates to electrically conductive plug pins and is especially, but not exclusively, concerned with electrically conductive plug pins for use in electric plugs of the kind used in domestic and similar wiring systems.
It is a requirement of British Standard Specification No. 1363 relating to 13 amp electric plugs of the kind used in domestic and similar wiring systems that a neutral or earth conductor of an electric cable to which the plug is to be connected must be clamped directly to an integral part of the appropriate plug pin and that, where a clamping screw is used to effect the clamping operation, the wall through which the clamping screw projects must have a minimum thickness of 0.062 mm.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a simple and inexpensive electrically conductive pin assembly which is especially, but not exclusively, suitable for use as a neutral or earth pin assembly of an electric plug and which meets the requirements of the aforesaid British Standard Specification.
According to the invention, the improved electrically conductive pin assembly comprises a hollow pin formed from folded or otherwise shaped sheet metal or metal alloy and having, integral with one end of the pin, a cradle for reception of a bare end of a cable conductor and, for fitting around the cradle, a collar having in a tapped hole extending through its wall a clamping screw for clamping a bare end of a cable conductor positioned in the cradle against the internal surface of the cradle.
The cradle may be of any suitable external crosssection provided that a clamping screw projecting between the free edges of the wall of the cradle and into the bore of the collar can clamp a bare end of a cable conductor positioned in the cradle against the internal surface of the cradle but, for ease of manufacture, preferably the cradle has an external shape of approximately circular form so that the collar can have a bore of circular cross-section.
Preferably, the wall of the cradle subtends an angle lying in the range 240 to 2855.
The collar may have an external cross-section of any desired shape depending on the space available in a plug housing.
The axis of the cradle may lie substantially parallel to, and preferably along, the axis of the plug pin or the axis of the cradle may lie approximately normal to, or at any other convenient angle to, the plug pin axis.
In all cases, preferably the cradle lies within the space bounded by continuations of the side walls of the plug pin.
The invention also includes an electric plug having at least one plug pin as hereinbefore described.
The invention is further illustrated by a description, by way of example, of a preferred form of earth pin assembly and two preferred forms of neutral pin assembly, for use in an electric plug, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 shows a partially exploded perspective view of the preferred form of earth pin assembly, and
Figures 2 and 3, respectively, show exploded perspective views of the two forms of neutral pin assembly.
Referring to Figure 1, the earth pin assembly comprises a hollow earth pin 1 and an integral cradle 2 formed from a folded blank of sheet metal and, fitting tightly around the cradle, a separately formed collar 3 having in its wall a tapped hole 4 for reception of a clamping screw 5. In use, the collar 3 is fitted around the cradle 2 so that the axis of the tapped hole 4 lies approximately midway between the free edges of the wall of the cradle, a bare end of electric conductor is positioned in the cradle, and the clamping screw 5 is tightened to clamp the bare end of electric conductor against the internal surface of the cradle.
Figure 2 shows the first form of neutral pin assembly comprising a hollow neutral pin 11 and an integral cradle 12 formed from a folded blank of sheet metal. As will be seen, the axis of the cradle 12 extends substantially normal to the axis of the hollow pin 11. A collar 13 having a tapped hole 14for reception of a clamping screw 15, fits tightly around the collar 13. In use, the collar 13 is fitted around the cradle 12 so that axis of the tapped hole 14 lies approximately midway between the free edges of the wall of the cradle. A bare end of electric conductor is positioned in the cradle and is clamped to the internal surface of the cradle by the clamping screw 15.
Figure 3 shows a second form of neutral pin assembly comprising a hollow neutral pin 21 and an integral cradle 22 formed from a folded blank of sheet metal, the axis of the cradle lying substantially normal to the axis of the pin. A separately formed collar 23 having a tapped hole 24 for reception of a clamping screw 25 fits tightly around the cradle 22.
The second form of neutral pin assembly is used in the same way as the first form of neutral pin assembly.
1. An electrically conductive pin assembly comprising a hollow pin formed from folded or otherwise shaped sheet metal or metal alloy and having, integral with one end of the pin, a cradle for reception of a bare end of a cable conductor and, for fitting around the cradle, a collar having in a tapped hole extending through its wall a clamping screw for clamping a bare end of a cable conductor positioned in the cradle against the internal surface of the cradle.
2. An electrically conductive pin assembly as claimed in Claim 1, wherein the cradle has an external shape of approximately circularform and the collar has a bore of circular cross-section.
3. An electrically conductive pin assembly as claimed in Claims 1 or 2, wherein the wall of the cradle subtends an angle lying in the range 240" to 285".
4. An electrically conductive pin assembly as claimed in any one of the preceding Claims, wherein
