Abstract

An electrical filter assembly comprises a contact (2, 3, 4) carrying a tubular filter (5) which is electrically and mechanically connected to, for example, a ground plate (101) by means of a tubular mounting member (8, 9, 10) one end of which engages the filter (5) and the other, larger end of which contains potting material (16) to render the assembly rigid. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Electrical filter assembly This invention relates to an electrical filter assembly, and particularly to such an assembly comprising an electrical terminal having a cylindrical mounting portion, and a cylindrical tubular filter mounted on the mounting portion of the terminal with an inner contact member of the filter electrically connected to the terminal.
Normally the filter will have an outer contact member which must be connected to, for example, a grounding plate through which the terminal and filter pass, this connection often also serving to mount the terminal and filter mechanically to the grounding plate.
However, in view of the often brittle nature and small size of the filter, difficulties are often experienced in mounting the terminal and filter in a mechanically and electrically reliable manner and without damaging the filter.
According to this invention an assembly as set out above also includes a tubular electrically conductive mounting member having a first portion of relatively small diameter in which the filter is received and which is electrically connected to an outer contact member of the filter, and a second portion of relatively large diameter co-axial with the terminal and filter and extending from the first portion beyond one end of the filter; and electrically insulating potting material at least partially filling the space between the second portion of the mounting member and the filter.
With the assembly of this invention the mounting member facilitates mounting of the assembly in a hole in a grounding plate, while the potting material serves to render the assembly rigid and provide protection for the filter.
This invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the drawing, in which Figure 1 is an exploded view of an assembly according to the invention; Figure 2 is a longitudinal section through the assembly of Figure 1 in the assembled state and mounted in a hole in a grounding plate; and Figure 3 is a longitudinal section through another assembly according to the invention.
The assembly shown in Figure 1 comprises an electrical terminal 1 in the form of a cylindrical pin having a first contact portion 2 at one end, an intermediate mounting portion 3 of less diameter than the first contact portion 2, and a second contact portion 4 of less diameter than the mounting portion 3, at the other end, a tubular filter 5 having inner and outer contact members (for example as described in Patent No. 1272347) and a tubular electrically conductive mounting member 6. The assembly also includes an optional terminal adaptor 7. The mounting member 6 has a first portion 8 of relatively small diameter and a second portion 9 of relatively large diameter, the portions 8 and 9 being joined by an intermediate portion 10 of intermediate diameter, the junction between the portions 9 and 10 providing an external annular shoulder 11 facing the portion 8.
Referring now to Figure 2 also, on assembly the filter 5 is mounted on the mounting portion 3 of the terminal 1 with an inner contact member 12 of the filter 5 electrically connected as by soldering to the mounting portion 3 of the terminal 1, and with an end of the filter 5 abutting the shoulder 13 formed between the portions 2 and 3 of the terminal 1. The mounting member 6 is then mounted on the filter 5 which is received in the portion 8 of the mounting member 5, this portion 8 being electrically connected as by soldering to an outer contact member 14 of the filter 5. The mounting member 6 is positioned with its portion 9 co-axial with the terminal 1 and filter 5 and extending beyond the adjacent end of the filter 5 (as clearly shown in Figure 2).If required the adaptor member 7 is then mounted on the terminal 1 as shown, this member 7 serving to provide a contact portion 15 of required diameter.
The space between portions 9 and 10 of the mounting member 6, and the filter 5, terminal 1, and if present as shown the adaptor member 7, is then at least partially filled with an electrically insulating potting material 16 which when set serves to render the assembly relatively rigid.
The assembly can then be mounted in a hole 100 in, for example, a conductive grounding plate 101, with the portion 10 of the mounting member 6 being received in the hole 100 and the shoulder 11 of the mounting member 6 abutting one surface of the plate 101, the mounting member 6 being connected to the plate 101 by means of solder. The mounting member 6 then provides the necessary electrical connection between the outer contact 14 of the filter 5 and the grounding plate 101.
Referring now to Figure 3, the assembly here shown is similar to that of Figures 1 and 2, and corresponding parts have the same references. The essential differences are that the terminal has only two portions 2 and 4 with the contact portion 4 simultaneously serving as the mounting portion for the filter 5, and that the mounting member 6 has a second second portion 17 of relatively large diameter extending from the first portion 8 in the opposite direction to the first second portion 9, and also at least partially filled with potting material 16.
The junction between the second second portion 17 and the first portion 8 of the mounting member 6 is formed to provide an outwardly directed annular flange 18 by which the assembly can be secured in a hole in a grounding plate (not shown) as shown in the embodiment of Figures 1 and 2.
