Abstract

The invention relates to apparatus for personal protection comprising a housing in which is mounted electronic circuit means and an audible alarm and means of the housing for connecting the circuit and the alarm to actuate the alarm. The apparatus may be a button, brooch, pendant, earring, cuff-link or other item of personal jewellery.

Description

SPECIFICATION Apparatus for Personal Protection Technological field of the invention The invention relates to apparatus for personal protection.
Background art As the incidence of attacks on the person, such as "muggings" or rape increases, it is becoming in creasingly necessary for a person to take steps to protect him or herself and to draw attention to any attempt at personal violation. One proposed device comprises a device carried by a person to inject a drug into an assailant to render him temporarily unconscious. This is an expensive device and is also difficult to use in a tense situation when one is being physically threatened. There may be not be time to use the device. These are serious disadvantages of the device.
Disclosure ofthe invention It is an object of the invention to seek to mitigate these disadvantages of the prior art.
According to the invention there is prqvided apparatus for personal protection, comprising a housing adapted to be worn on, or as an adjunct to, clothing, electronic circuit means in the housing connected to and for actuating an electrically oper able audible alarm, and means of the housing for connecting the circuit and the alarm so that the alarm is actuated.
The technological advance achieved by the inven tion is that a device embodying the invention is easily carried on the person and can be readily actuated even if one is being assaulted. The connec tor means may comprise a part of the housing movable relative, preferably depressible, to the remainder of the housing. This construction is relatively simple and enables the movable part to act as a simple "push" switch.
The audible alarm may be situated internally of the housing. This construction provides a relatively compact construction.
A button embodying the invention is hereinafter described with reference to the accompanying drawing.
Brief description of the drawing The drawing shows a schematic transverse sec- tion through a button.
'Description of best modes for carrying out the invention Referring to the drawing, the button 1 shown comprises a housing 2 which is adapted to worn on clothing by a loop 3 for thread (not shown). The housing 1 has internally an electronic circuit means 4 in the form of a microcircuit or chip connected electronically by an electric circuit including a switch 5 to an alarm 6 which gives out an audible signal when actuated.
The housing 1 comprises a stationary part 7 carrying the loop 3, and a part 8 which is movable, or depressible in the direction of the arrow "X" to close the connection between the electronic circuit means 4 and the audible alarm 6.
In use, the button 1 is worn on clothing in a position where it is inconspicuous but can be easily reached by a hand of the wearer. If the wearer is attacked, it is merely necessary for the part 8 to be pushed, in the direction of the arrow "X", to complete the circuit through the switch 5 and so actuate the alarm 6.
It will be understood that the invention shown and above described may be modified for example, the part 8 may be pulled, in a direction away from the loop 3, in order to actuate the alarm 6. Also, although a button has been described, the apparatus may comprise a housing to be used as an adjunct to clothing, such as jewellery, for example a pendant, brooch, earring, cuff-link or other item of personal jewellery.
1. Apparatus for personal protection, comprising a housing adapted to be worn on, or as an adjunct to, clothing, electronic circuit means in the housing connected to and for actuating an electrically operable audible alarm, and means of the housing for connecting the circuit and the alarm so that the alarm is actuated.
2. Apparatus according to Claim 1, the connection means comprising a part of the housing movable relative to the remainder of the housing.
3. Apparatus according to claim 2, the part being depressible relative to the remainder of the housing.
4. Apparatus according to claim 2, the part being movable away from the remainder of the housing, which remainder is stationary.
5. Apparatus according to any preceding claim, the audible alarm being situated internally of the housing.
6. Apparatus for personal protection, substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to and as shown in the accompanying drawing.
