Description

SPECIFICATION A pre-centring device for use when inserting an electric circuit board in a connector The invention relates to devices for guiding electric circuit boards such as printed circuit boards, equipment circuit support boards or the like during insertion in a multi-point connector. It is applicable in particular to telecommunications and to the electronics industry for boards which have a high concentration of connection points and a narrow inlet width for the board at the female connector.
In electrical equipment racks the circuits are generally in the form of printed circuit boards and equipment circuit support boards. The circuit boards are placed side by side in cells which are arranged in the compartments of an equipment cabinet or of a frame. At the time of assembly the detachable boards are plugged into the connectors placed at the backs of the cells.
From a given size upwards circuit boards are generally not very rigid and consequently become warped during handling and treatment. This makes it difficult to position them in a female connector. To facilitate insertion of the boards in a connector, it is known to fix stiffening braces on the component side, by rivetting, for example. The use of such stiffening braces gives rise to a number of disadvantages including waste of space on the board, increase in the weight of the board, and increase in the cost of manufacture and of installation.
Preferred embodiments of the present invention overcome said disadvantages by providing a pre-centring device which makes it possible to use boards without stiffening braces.
The invention provides a pre-centring device for use with a fixed connector located in a cell of an electric equipment rack to guide an electric circuit board during insertion therein, the device comprising a guide piece disposed near an end of the connector and having at least two guide tabs which centre the board near the inlet to the connector.
An embodiment of a board guide in accordance with the invention is described hereinafter with reference to the single figure of the accompanying drawing.
The figure illustrates a connector 1 intended, for example, to be fixed by means of a screw 2 in the back of a cell or of a module in an equipment rack e.g. one of the type described in French patent No 73 30 537 (published under the No 21 97 360).
The rear of the connector has connection pins 3 and its front has a slot 4 in which a printed circuit board 5 is to be inserted.
During insertion and withdrawal of a printed circuit board into and from a cell, the printed circuit board engages in a slideways (not shown) qf the cell and slides therein.
The connector includes a guide piece 6 to centre the printed circuit board at the inlet 4 of the connector. Said guide piece is made of a thermoplastic material and is set astride one end of the connector. Said guide piece 6 includes: a base plate 7 provided with a hole 8 by which it is fixed to the connector by means of the screw 2 which also serves to fix the connector in the back of the cell; and two side plates 9 straddling the sides 1 3 of the connector and ending in two tabs 10 disposed perpendicular to the side plates 9 and placed on each side of the top of the connector slot 4. Each of the tabs 10 has a large camming surface or chamfer 11 which guides the edge of the printed circuit board 5 towards the connector inlet 4 which itself has a smaller inlet chamfer. The chamfers of the tabs are appreciably larger than the inlet chamfer of the connector. In a known manner the printed circuit board 5 includes contact tracks 12 designed to come into contact with a series of corresponding connector parts inside the connector 1 when the printed circuit board is plugged into the connector. Even if said printed circuit board is warped the tabs 10 installed on each side of the slot 4 guide it and pre-centre it in the slot thereby engaging it correctly in the connector.
Another guide part 6 is placed at the other end of the connector so as to ensure proper parallelism between the printed circuit board and the inlet of the connector.
A cell for an equipment rack can include several, e.g. 1 6 or 26 connectors fixed in parallel and designed to accommodate the same number of equipment circuit boards. Because the side plates 9 of the guide piece are thin, e.g. 5mm, assembling such devices on the connectors does not reduce the number of connectors which can be placed in a cell.
In one variant, to centre the printed circuit board along a greater part of its height, the guide piece may include several pre-centring tabs disposed parallel to one another.
A resilient plastics guide piece can be fitted on various forms of connector. Further, its size is independent of the length of the connector. Indeed, in practice it ensures proper guidance of the edge of a printed circuit board however long said edge may be.
In another variant, the guide piece can be integrally moulded with the connector.
The advantages of the pre-centring device in accordance with the invention are as follows: The device allows components to make full use of the printed circuit board area. I.e. the space usually occupied by stiffening braces on printed circuit boards is saved.
Further, as far as concerns alignment between the guide piece and the connector, manufacturing tolerances are not so strict.
Manufacturing costs are reduced due to the fact that manufacturing tolerances are not so strict, that there are no stiffening braces or fixing parts for said braces and that rivetting and assembling the printed circuit boards is simplified.
Use of the invention ensures great reliability inserting printed circuit boards and supports components in connectors. When a printed circuit board is inserted in the slot 4 of a connector, the chamfers 11 of the tabs guide the edge thereof, then the tabs themselves pre-centre the printed circuit board in the axial plane of the slot, the printed circuit board being finally centred by fixed contacts 14 of the connector which contacts guide the contact tracks 1 2 of the printed circuit board.
