Abstract

A water tank is pierced by a series of inclined tubes through which pass the hot flue gases from solid fuel or wood fires. The tubes can run from front to rear of the fire chamber, or laterally. The relatively cool surfaces of the inclined tank/tube unit allow the tarry flue gas passing through the tubes to condense. The tarry fluids then collect and run down the tubes into the drainage holes at the lower ends of the tubes, where it then returns to the fire chamber and is burned.

Description

SPECIFICATION Pierced boiler central heating stove A water tank is pierced by a series of tubes through which pass the hot flue gases from solid fuel or wood fires. The tubes can run from front to rear of the fire chamber, or laterally.
The relatively cool surfaces of the inclined tank/tube unit allow the tarry flue gas passing through the tubes to condense. The tarry fluids then collect and run down the tubes into the drainage holes at the lower ends of the tubes, where it then returns to the fire chamber and is burned.
Previous solid fuel and wood fired hot water tanks have been in the form of back boilers, or wrap-around water jackets or boilers where water is passed through tubes in a fire chamber and are of considerably inferior efficiency.
This arrangement of flue pipes piercing a water tank permits the greatest degree of heat extraction so far achieved.
The key to its effective performance lies in the tar drainage system, a unique device. Heat extraction of this efficiency poses problems with wood burning fires. The temperature of the fire gases is reduced to the level where tar condensation on the fire chamber walls is a problem, solved by condensing the tarry fluids on the inclined flue tubes and then draining them away back to the fire.
This installation has been tested in the prototype stove constructed by me, details of which are given herewith (herein).
In the drawing the reference numerals indicate the following features: - 1) Chimney damper and control rod, 900 rotation.
2) Flue.
3) Boiler water tank with flow and return connection.
4) Inclined flue gas tubes allowing condensed tar to enter fire chamber through tar drainage passages.
5) Fire chamber.
6) Secondary air control tubes with holes along their length allowing air to enter the full length of fire chamber, thus aiding complete combustion of volatile gas produced during burning.
7) Primary air control on door.
8) Quick draw damper used in stoking and lighting. Opened by rotating through 900.
