Abstract
A laminate floor covering primarily for a cattle stall floor comprises a sheet or block 10 of rubberised cork granules with a skin 11, 12 of tough rubber. The skin may completely surround the sheet 10. The covering combines the wear and aseptic properties of rubber with warmth retaining characteristics comparable with a straw bed. <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
Floor covering
This invention relates to floor covering. Its primary use is for a floor covering in cattle stalls or other agricultural buildings where recumbent animals are required to be kept warm.
The usual practice of using straw as a floor covering is becoming disadvantageous due to supply and cost problems. It also has the added disadvantage of clogging the waste disposal systems and thus adding to costs of this operation. With the advent of "zero grazing," the dairy cattle are kept inside for longer periods or even permanently, thus creating a need for a floor covering which is warmth retaining.
The use of rubber sheeting as a flooring for such purposes is known, and whilst it is hard-wearing and aseptic, it is heavy, costly and possesses only a mild degree of thermal insulation.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a flooring having the wear and aseptic properties of rubber but with the warmth retaining characteristics comparable with a straw bed and to this end the present invention provides a laminate floor covering comprising a sheet or block of rubberised cork granules with a skin of tough rubber. Such a laminate also has the advantages of being light in weight, flexible and of relatively low cost.
One floor covering according to the invention is shaped as a mat of 1.6 cm thick rubberised cork granules, vulcanised to which and completely surrounding it is a skin of hard wearing rubber some 2 mm thick. The mat size is typically 90 cm x 90 cm. The method of production of the mat is simply to mix the cork granules and rubber in the usual internal rubber mixing machine. The mixture is sheeted to 1.6 cm on a two roll rubber mill and cut into squares 90 cm x 90 cm. The skin compound is sheeted to 2 mm and cut to size such that when wrapped around the mat the mat is completely enclosed by the skin. The whoie unit is then transferred to a mould which is placed between heated platens in a hydraulic press and treated to a twenty minute heating at 1 30 C at a pressure of 50 tons.
A cross-section of a part of a skin-enclosed mat as above described is shown in Figure 1 of the accompanying drawing in which numeral 10 represents the rubberised cork granules and numerals 11 and 12 represent top and bottom skins.
The comparative effectiveness of a floor covering according to the invention as above described, relative to a known rubber sheet, is seen from Figure 2 of the drawings which depicts the changes in temperature of the underside of the covering (curve A) and the sheet (curve B) when heat is applied (starting from a datum of 20"C) to the top face to maintain it at 400C (body temperature of animal). After several hours the underside of the covering is only a degree or so above datum whilst the underside of the sheet has risen nearly 10 C. In practice this means that, with the mat in use on the floor of a cattle stall, there is virtually no heat loss from the mat to the floor, and therefore the mat serves as a cost free heated floor for a recumbent animal. When the animal vacates the stall the mat takes several hours to lose its stored heat.
Atypical composition of the mat is (parts by weight):
Rubber 100 Accelerator 1
Zinc Oxide 5 Sulphur 5 StearicAcid 1 Cork (2-4 mm granules) 175
Antioxidant 2
Atypical composition ofthe skin is (parts by weight):
Rubber 100 Accelerator 1
Zinc Oxide 5 Sulphur 1.5
Stearic Acid 1 Paraffin Wax 2
Antioxidant 2 Carbon Black 30
Clay 60
A cattle stall floor would be covered with a number of 90 cm x 90 cm skin-enclosed mats which can be easily laid by hand in abutting relationship. The mats can be cut if required and there is not essential need to seal off the cut edges. However, in general use there should be little need to cut the mats as a 100%floor coverage would not be sought. Some accommodation to irregular shaped floors could be met by making mats of other sizes.
Lifting and storing of the mats is another simple operation.
The flexibility of the mats allows them to accept unevenness of the under floor without risk of fracture.
Whilst floor covering in accordance with the invention has been described in the context of use in cattle stalls with a surfacewear-resistantto animal hooves, its general good properties will lead to use in other situations, where warmth and pleasant tread are sought. Its handleability in tile or mat form and its general toughness and durability make it attractive for use as temporary floor covering on flat ground or hard reasonably flat surfaces.
Where there is a risk of displacement in use the mats could be fastened to the ground or sub-floor.
