Abstract

A cylinder or roller of a printing machine is provided with a surface layer applied by coating it with a powder of at least one of a metal, a metal oxide and a metal carbide in a substantially homogeneous thin layer with a layer thickness of less than 50 microns, while using powder grain sizes of less than 25 microns, for the purposes of corrosion protection and reduction of any tendency to the smearing-off of ink. When metal powder is used this may be chrome, nickel or cobalt. The powder coating may be in one or more layers and micropores may be closed by sealers.

Description

SPECIFICATION A printing machine The present invention relates to a printing machine comprising at least one cylinder or roller which is provided with a surface layer for protection against corrosion and for reduction of any tendency to the smearing-off of ink.
Printing machines are known, which for avoidance of the smearing-off are equipped with cylinders provided with a chrome layer having a thickness of 7 to 1 2 microns and a surface roughness of 2 to 7.5 microns. This chrome layer is porous and offers no adequate protection against corrosion of the cylinders coming into contact with water and chemicals.
Cylinders are also known, which have a surface layer of metals, metal oxides and/or metal carbides in a thickness of 0.25 microns consisting of an intermediate layer of 0.2 millimetres of a thin covering layer of 0.05 to 0.06 millimetres. This surface layer affords adequate protection against corrosion and prevents the smearing-off. The layer, which is applied in several operating steps and not homogeneous, however causes local deviations from the basic intended geometric shape of the cylinder. The demands made on the high accuracy of cylinders of printing machines are thereby no longer fulfilled, which leads to a reduction in quality of the prints produced on the printing machine; alternatively, further operating steps, such as for example grinding, are required for the restoration of the geometry of the cylinders.Beyond that, this surface layer requires a high material expenditure.
It is therefore desirable for cylinders and rollers of a printing machine to be provided with a surface layer, which is applied by means of powder coating for protection against corrosion and for the reduction of any tendency to the smearing-off of ink and which displays a low thickness tolerance so as to produce substantially no change in the geometry of the cylinder and the roller.
According to the present invention, there is now provided a printing machine comprising at least one cylinder or roller which is provided with a surface layer applied thereto by coating with a powder having grain sizes not exceeding 25 microns and being in layer thickness not exceeding 50 microns.
In an example of embodiment of the present invention, such a surface layer comprises metals, such as for example chrome, nickel and cobalt, metal oxides and/or metal carbides, for cylinders .and rollers and is produced by means of powder coating with the use of powders of at least one of the named materials with a grain size not exceeding 25 microns. The powder coating of rollers and cylinders can be performed by any suitable known method to a thickness not exceeding 50 microns in one or more layers; possibly present micropores may be closed by means of sealers.
The porosity of the surface layer is substantially reduced and a high degree of homogeneity is attained when processing powders with a grain size not exceeding 25 microns so that even thin layers in conscious departure from generally accepted opinion afford adequate corrosion protection with simultaneous reduction in any tendency to the smearing-off of ink.
By the thin layer technique, it is possible to produce layer thickness with smallest thickness tolerance below 5 microns and thereby to fulfil the accuracy demands which have been set on the surface geometry of cylinders and rollers of printing machines.
Through the application of the think layer technique, a better material economy may be attained and the work effort for the production of the surface layer may be lowered at the same time.
1. A printing machine comprising at least one cylinder or roller which is provided with a surface layer applied thereto by coating with a powder having grain sizes not exceeding 25 microns and being in a layer thickness not exceeding 50 microns.
2. A printing machine as claimed in claim 1, wherein the powder comprises at least one metallic material.
3. A printing machine as claimed in claim 1, wherein the powder comprises at least one metal oxide.
4. A printing machine as claimed in claim 1, wherein the powder comprises at least one metal carbide.
5. A printing machine substantially as hereinbefore described and constructed and arranged for the purpose hereinbefore set forth.
