Abstract
The heater comprises an outer casing (10') having in a side thereof an openable or removable door (13'). The door has a transparent or translucent panel (14') therein. An air inlet opening (22) is provided at or adjacent the lower edge of the panel so that in use air can be drawn into the casing through the opening and caused to flow upwardly along the inner surface of the panel to screen or substantially screen the products of combustion therefrom. <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
A solid fuel fired heater
This invention relates to a solid fuel fired heater comprising an outer casing having an openable or removable door in a side of the casing.
It is well known to provide a transparent or translucent panel in the doors of such heaters so that the glow of the burning fuel can be viewed from the exterior.
It has been common practice to burn smokeless fuel in these heaters. A major disadvantage of burning coal is that the products of combustion would soon render the inside of the panel dirty.
The invention provides a solid fuel fired heater comprising an outer casing having in a side thereof an openable or removable door with a transparent or translucent panel therein, there being provided at or adjacent to the lower edge of the panel an air inlet opening so that in use air can be drawn into the casing through the opening and caused to flow upwardly along the inner surface of the panel to screen or substantially screen the products of combustion therefrom.
Preferably, the opening extends over the full width of the panel.
Preferably, there is a further air inlet opening provided at or adjacent to the upper edge of the panel. The further opening may extend over the full width of the panel.
Alternatively, the air inlet opening may extend around the panel.
Preferably, primary air for combustion is drawn in through an aperture in the casing and means are provided whereby at least some of this primary air is also caused to flow upwardly along the inner surface of the panel.
The invention will now be more particularly described with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a schematic view of a conventional solid fuel fired heater,
Figure 2 is a schematic view of one embodiment of a solid fuel fired heater according to the present invention,
Figure 3 is a perspective view of part of the door of the heater of Figure 2, and
Figure 4 is a sectional view of the door of
Figure 3.
Figure 1 shows a conventional solid fuel fire heater. The heater comprises a casing 10 having a base, a top and four vertical sides. A fire grate 11 is mounted within the casing and is spaced from the bottom thereof. Below the fire grate 11, and in one side of the casing 10 is an aperture 12 through which primary combustion air is drawn. A door 13 is hingedly connected to the vertical side of the casing which faces forwardly so that the heater may be charged with fuel. The door has therein a transparent or translucent panel 14, e.g.
of glass, so that the glow of the burning fuel can be viewed from the exterior. A guide 1 5 ensures that at least some of the primary combustion air is drawn past the front edge of the fire grate 11 and the lower edge of the door 13, but as illustrated by arrow A this air is not directed along the inner surface of the panel 14 and therefore there is nothing to prevent products of combustion from contacting the panel 14.
Figure 2 shows an embodiment of a solid fuel fired heater according to the present invention.
Apart from door 13', this heater is exactly the same as the heater shown in Figure 1 and comprises an outer casing 10', a fire grate 1 1', an aperture 12' and a guide 15'. However, glass panel 14' of the door is supported in spaced relationship to a frame 16 of the door so as to define a gap or air inlet opening 22 between the panel 14' and the frame 1 6. The opening 22 extends around the entire periphery of the panel 14'. Also, the inner surface 18 of the lower part of the frame 16 is so shaped as to cause primary combustion air which flows between the guide 15' and this inner surface 1 8 to pass upwardly along the inner surface of the panel 14'.
As shown more particularly in Figures 3 and 4, the glass panel 14' comprises a plurality of elongate glass strips 1 9 mounted in a metal subframe 20 which is, in turn, supported in spaced relationship to the frame 16 by lugs 21. The lugs 21 support the sub-frame 20 such that the plane of the inner surface of the panel 14' intersects the upper, horizontally extending limb of the frame 1 6 but is displaced forwardly of the lower, horizontally extending limb of the frame 1 6.
Thus, the part of the opening 22 adjacent the lower limb of the frame 1 6 lies rearwardly of the panel 14' whilst the part of the opening 1 8 adjacent the upper limb of the frame lies above the panel.
Therefore, air is drawn in through the opening 22 at the lower edge of the panel in a direction substantially parallel to the plane of the inner surface of the panel and passes upwardly along the inner surface of the panel, whereas air is drawn in through the opening 22 along the upper edge of the panel in a direction transverse to the plane of the inner surface of the panel.
A combination of the primary combustion air directed by the inner surface 1 8 and air drawn in through the opening 22 along the lower edge thereof serves to screen the panel from said products of combustion, the opening 22 between the upper edge of panel 14' and the frame 1 6 assisting in this process, and thus, when coal is burnt in the heater, the products of combustion are prevented or substantially prevented from rendering the panel dirty.
1. A solid fuel fired heater comprising an outer casing having in a side thereof an openable or removable door with a transparent or translucent panel therein, there being provided at or adjacent to the lower edge of the panel an air inlet opening so that in use air can be drawn into the casing through the opening and caused to flow upwardly along the inner surface of the panel to screen or substantially screen the products of combustion therefrom.
