Abstract

A squeeze roller for washing or fulling machines comprising a roller body 2 and a cover portion 3, wherein the cover portion is made of a composite material of fibres or yarns 4 of a synthetic high-polymer material and a synthetic resin fixing composition 5, wherein the fibres or yarns are so arranged that at least some of the ends 6 thereof project from the fixing composition in the manner of a nap, and wherein the fibres have a greater abrasion resistance than the fixing composition. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Squeeze Roller for a Washing or Fulling Machine The present invention relates to a squeeze roller for a washing and/or a fulling machine comprising a roller body and a cover portion in which at least the cover portion is a composite material formed of fibres of yarns of a synthetic high-polymer material and a synthetic resin fixing material.
A squeeze roller is known which has a cover portion which is a composite material formed of synthetic fibres such as polyamide fibres and a fixing composition such as silicon rubber. In such a roller, although the fibres are radially disposed, the gripping property of the cover portion is insufficiently good in that material, in particular textile materials, slip thereon. In this roller, however, the fibres are completely embedded in the fixing composition.
The present invention therefore seeks to provide a squeeze roller which has a long life and good conduction characteristics when a textile material is being treated whilst preventing abrasion points from being formed on the textile fabric.
In accordance with the present invention, there is provided a squeeze roller for washing or fulling machines comprising a roller body and a cover portion, wherein the cover portion is made of a composite material of fibres or yarns of a synthetic high-polymer material and a synthetic resin fixing composition, wherein the fibres or yarns are so arranged that at least some of the ends thereof project from the fixing composition in the manner of a nap, and wherein the fibres have a greater abrasion resistance than the fixing composition.
Due to the fact that the fibres project from the fixing composition in the form of a nap and have a greater abrasion resistance than the fixing compound, a better grip on the material to be squeezed is achieved without the fixing composition dragging on the material. The fibres are soft enough to prevent damage to the material.
Preferably, the fixing composition is a solventfree synthetic resin and is either a polyurethane or an epoxy resin.
Desirably, the fibres are located in a random arrangement in the fixing composition.
Advantageously, the fibres form a fleece in the fixing composition.
Further preferably, the ends of the fibres project from the fixing composition by at least 1/3 mm.
The invention will be further described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Fig, 1 is a side view of a squeeze roller in accordance with the present invention, and Fig. 2 is a cross-sectional view of a detail of Fig. 1 but on an enlarged scale relative thereto.
In the drawings, there is shown a squeeze roller 1 of a washing or fulling machine. The roller comprises a roller body 2 which may be formed of conventionally known material such as steel, or a light metal, or of a reinforced plastics material.
The roller further includes a cover member 3 which may be integrally formed with the roller body 2. Generally, however, the cover member 3 is made separately from the roller body 2 and is mounted thereon.
The cover member 3 is a compound structure which consists of one or more layers of synthetic, high-polymer fibres 4 and of a fixing compound 5, which latter is preferably a solvent-free synthetic resin. The ends 6 of a considerable proportion of the fibres should project from the grouting composition 5, for example by at least by 1/3 mm.
The fibres 4 may be of a polyamide, a polyester a polyacrylic material and may be in the form of a fleece layer. The fixing composition is expediently a polyurethane or an epoxy resin. Whatever the materials selected for the fibres and the fixing composition, the fibres 4 must have a greater abrasion resistance than the fixing composition 5.
In use, the ends 6 of the fibres 4 project from the fixing compound 5 and engage the textile material being treated so that the squeeze roller does not drag over the textile roller. Even with greater wearing stress, it is ensured that the ends of the fibres, because they have a greater resistance to abrasion than the fixing composition, always project therefrom so as to engage the textile material.
Claims
1. A squeeze roller for washing or fulling machines comprising a roller body and a cover portion wherein the cover portion is made of a composite material of fibres or yarns of a synthetic high-polymer material and a synthetic resin fixing composition, wherein the fibres or yarns are so arranged that at least some of the ends thereof project from the fixing composition in the manner of a nap, and wherein the fibres have a greater abrasion resistance than the fixing composition.
2. A squeeze roller as claimed in claim 1, wherein the fixing composition is a solvent-free synthetic resin and is either a polyurethane or an epoxy resin.
3. A squeeze roller as claimed in claim 1 or 2, wherein the fibres are located in a random arrangement in the fixing composition.
4. A squeeze roller as claimed in claim 3 wherein the fibres form a fleece in the fixing composition.
5. A squeeze roller as claimed in any preceding claim wherein the ends of the fibres project from the fixing compositions by at least 1/3 mm.
