Abstract

A solution for de-sizing and degumming textiles &c. is obtained by aqueous extraction of a culture of microscopic fungi, such as those of the genera Aspergillus, Penecillium, or Mucor, and particularly those of the species Eurotium Oryzae. The spores are sown on a suitable culture medium, such as broken cereal grains from which, preferably, the greater part of the starchy matter has been removed and to which other nourishing substances such as glucose, peptones, sodium phosphate and chloride, and sodium-magnesium salts may be added. The culture medium may first be sterilized with steam. The culture may be bedded up and maintained in a moist atmosphere at a uniform temperature not exceeding 45 DEG C., or, alternatively, it may be thoroughly aerated by being kept in motion. In either case, the fungi are sufficiently developed after 30-60 hours and the mass is then extracted with water. The extract may be used direct, or it may be stabilized by the joint action of heat and an antiseptic.ALSO:Textiles, fabrics, and the like are de-sized and degummed by treatment in a bath containing an enzyme which is derived from a vegetable fungus and possesses both proteolytic and diastatic properties. The process occupies 6-10 hours.
