Adjusting for position. - In elastic-fluid turbines means are provided for automatically varying the relative positions of the rotor and stator. The thrust block and rotor are moved bodily in relation to the stator so as to prevent fouling of parts due to changes in the temperature or load, such parts being correctly positioned for efficient working when the machine is hot. The axial position of the rotor d relative to the casing is varied by a movable thrust-block housing h, the thrust-pads f engaging a collar e on the rotor shaft. The housing h is connected by rods x and a bar w to two hollow rods n which are heated internally by steam tapped by way of a pipe o from a suitable stage of the turbine, a needle valve v controlling the flow of steam. Worm-gear z, 4 actuated by a hand-wheel 3 is provided for the initial adjustment of the housing h. Alternatively, the controlling-rods n may be electrically heated by coils which are so connected to the alternator driven by the turbine that the heating effect is proportional to the load. To provide a time lag for the compensating gear, so as to allow for the time taken by the rotor and stator to attain their working temperature, the controlling rods may each consist of two parallel members 10, 11, Fig. 5, having thin webs connected by an adjustable number of clamping pieces 13, which regulate the flow of heat from the steam-heated member 10 to the second member 11 acting as the main controlling rod. Fig. 7 shows one of a number of modifications of such double members 10, 11. A form of delay action for use with a hollow controlling-rod 19, Fig. 9, comprises a handadjusted piston 20 for varying the length of the hollow rod in contact with the steam. In a further modification, instead of the expansion of a main controlling-rod, the axial expansion of the machine itself is utilized to adjust the thrust-block through a pivoted lever, and in another modification, a relay or servo-motor is used to vary the relative positions of the rotor and stator.
