Abstract

A device for adjusting the force for balancing the door of a dishwashing machine comprises at least one tension spring 1 the ends of which are respectively connected to the frame 4 and to the door 5 of the machine by way of a flexible cable 2 capable of running over a return pulley 3. To provide for easy adjustment of the balancing force, the pulley 3 is journalled on a bracket 6 fixed internally to the casing of the machine in an adjustable position by means of screws 8 passing through at least one elongate opening 9 in said frame 4 and accessible from the exterior of the frame. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Device for Adjusting the Force for Balancing the Door of a Dish Washing Machine The present inno\tation relates to a device for adjusting the force for balancing the door of a domestic dishwashing machine.
It is known that the front door of dishwashing machines is normally balanced by a force which tends to facilitate closure of the door and to compensate for the weight thereof while the door is being opened in a downward direction. The balancing force is provided by at least one spring or the like which is connected at one end to the frame of the machine and at the other end to the door.
For dimensional reasons relating in particular to the base plinth or member of the machines, in the majority of cases the spring is arranged horizontally, along one side, at the bottom of the machine. One end of the spring is connected to the door by way of a flexible cable which is capable of running over a return pulley whose support spindle is fixed to the machine. The other end of the spring is connected to a bracket which is connected to the frame of the machine and which is provided with a plurality of connecting recesses so as to permit the force of the spring to be adjusted at discrete levels.
Such adjustment must be effected, for the purpose of ensuring good balancing of the door, in order to compensate for any relief of the spring force of the spring or, in the case of built-in dishwashing machines, in order to adapt the force of the spring to the various specific weights and thicknesses of the different cladding panels used on the machine, and thus to the weight of the door which varies in dependence on such factors.
In order to adjust the point at which the spring is connected to the frame of the machine (and thereby to adjust the balancing force), it is necessary to turn the machine over, which is a particularly difficult thing to do in the case of a built-in dishwashing machine which must first be removed from the space in which it is fitted.
According to the present invention, there is provided a device for adjusting the force for balancing the door of a dishwashing machine having a frame and a door, the device comprising at least one tension spring whose ends are respectively connected to the frame and to the door of the machine by way of a flexible cable capable of running over a return pulley, the return pulley being journalled on a bracket capable of being fixed internally to the casing of the machine in an adjustable position by means of screws or the like passing through at least one elongate opening in said frame and accessible from the exterior of the frame.
As will be apparent from the following description, the present invention can provide a device for adjusting the force for balancing the door of a dishwashing machine which is easily accessible without removing the machine and which permits continuous adjustment.
The invention will be further described by way of non-limitative example with reference to the accompanying drawing in which the sole figure is a diagrammatic view of a preferred embodiment of the adjusting device in two respective operating positions (one being shown in phantom).
The figure shows a tension spring 1 whose ends are respectively connected, by way of a flexible cable 2 capable of running over a return pulley 3, to the rear part of the frame 4 of the dishwashing machine and to the door 5. The spring 1 is disposed adjacent the bottom of the machine and the cable 2 extends in a substantially vertical plane, at one side of the machine, within the casing (not shown) of the machine.
The return pulley 3 is journalled in a bracket 6 of L-shape, which is capable of being fixed to the frame 4 in line with the front base plinth member 7 of the machine. The bracket 6 is fixed in position by means of screws 8 or the like which pass through respective vertically elongate openings 9 in the frame 4.
The screws 8 are accessible from the exterior of the frame 4 and are normally concealed by a removable cover panel (not shown) of the plinth member 7.
By simply removing the cover panel, it is thus possible to slacken the screws 8 with a tool, move the bracket 6 along the openings 9 and then retighten the screws 8, thereby providing a linear alteration in the force applied by the spring 1.
The above-described device permits precise and simple adjustment in respect of balancing the door 5, without the necessity to move the dishwashing machine from its normal operating position.
It will be appreciated that the above-described device could be mounted on both sides of the dishwashing machine and may be the subject of many variations within the scope of the appended
claims.
