Abstract

An arrangement is provided for providing a seal between a carriage 10 of an agglomerating machine and a suction tank 20 located therebelow. The arrangement comprises an auxiliary sealing guide 22 on an upper rim 21 of the suction tank cooperating with a resilient, V-section flexible gasket 30 on a longitudinal edge of a grid-type base 11 of the carriage. The lower limb 34 of the gasket is resiliently urged against the upper surface of the guide 22 to slide therealong during movement of the carriage. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Improvement in or relating to arrangements for providing seals between carriages of agglomerating machines and suction tanks located therebelow The present invention relates to an arrangement for providing a seal between a carriage of an agglomerating machine and a suction tank located therebelow.
In known agglomerating plants there are provided carriages loaded with material to be agglomerated which runs on rails by means of suitable wheels. The base of these carriages is in the form of a grid so that gases and dust which develop during the agglomerating process may be sucked from the base. Consequently, it is necessary to have a sealing system between the grid-type base of the above-mentioned carriages and suction tanks, this being of particular importance as possible penetration of parasitic air would be detrimental to operation.
A known sealing system is provided by disposing auxiliary guides parallel to the running tracks of the carriage wheels and disposed on the edges of the suction tanks. Sealing shoes slide over the auxiliary guides and are urged downwardly by suitable resilient means. In these conditions, lubrication with grease must be carried out between the upper surface of the guides and the lower surface of the shoes located thereabove.
This system is complicated in construction and, in addition, requires careful maintenance, and is therefore costly in respect of the lubrication apparatus. Inadequate lubrication can cause an increase in friction between the shoes and the guides entailing the following disadvantages: detachment of the shoes and guides from their seats; seizing of the shoes and thus blockage of the agglomerating machine (max. relay release); introduction of parasitic air between the carriages and the suction tanks with damaging effects on operation; breakage of safety catches of the agglomerating machine.
According to the invention there is provided an arrangement for providing a seal between a carriage of an agglomerating machine and a suction tank located therebelow, comprising an auxiliary sealing guide disposed on an upper rim of a lateral edge of the suction tank and arranged to cooperate with a corresponding additional sealing means disposed on a longitudinal edge of a gridtype base of the agglomerating machine carriage, the additional sealing means comprising a resiliently flexible gasket of V-shaped crosssection whose lower limb is resiliently urged against the upper surface of the auxiliary guide and slides thereon during movement of the carriage. It is thus possible to eliminate lubrication and means designed for this, and to replace the known rigid shoes and the spring system which urges these shoes downwardly by a single elastically deformable sealing element. It is also possible to achieve greater sealing efficiency between the carriages and the suction tanks, greater reliability of the system, and reduced maintenance.
The invention will be further described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a partial cross-sectional view of a carriage equipped with an arrangement constituting a preferred embodiment of the invention; Figure 2 shows a detail of the arrangement of Figure 1 on an enlarged scale.
An agglomerating plant is provided in a known manner with carriages 10, provided with a grid type base 11 which moves on support tracks 12 by means of wheels 13. Suction tanks 20 are provided in a known manner below the path of the carriages 10, auxiliary sealing guides 22 being provided on the longitudinal edges 21 of the suction tanks. In known arrangements, shoes which are urged resiliently downwardly slide on the auxiliary sealing guides 22, with the interposition of a suitable layer of lubricating grease.
In the arrangement shown in the accompanying drawings, the known rigid shoes are replaced by a resilient V-shaped gasket 30 which is open outwardly and whose upper limb 31 is fixed to the longitudinal edge of the carriage 10, for example by means of a rigid retaining plate 32 which is fixed, in its turn, by screws 33. The lower limb 34 of the gasket 30 tends to open downwardly as shown by dashed lines 34' in Fig. 2.
The presence of the auxiliary guide 22 urges the lower limb 34 of the gasket 30 upwardly and the limb bears on the auxiliary guide 22 with a force which is sufficient to provide a seal.
Maintaining of intimate contact between the gasket 30 and the auxiliary guide 22 is in addition ensured by the pressure within the suction tank 20.
The gasket 30 may be constructed of a suitable self-lubricating material, which eliminates the need for lubricating means.
A protective metal plate 40 may be provided, as shown in the drawings, for protection of the sealing gasket 30, the plate being constructed, for example, of an L-shaped profiled section whose upper flange is fixed to the base of the carriage 10 with the same means used to fix the sealing gasket 30.
