Abstract

A package is constructed by heat sealing together a plastic laminate and paper, for example to contain a sterilised product. The adhesive used in the lamination is coloured, this having the effect that where the laminate and paper are properly sealed together, the colour turns darker. Correctly sealed regions are thus clearly distinguishable from other regions and can be visually checked without special equipment or tests.

Description

SPECIFICATION Package made of plastic laminate and paper by heat sealing The present invention relates to a package made of plastic laminate and paper by heat sealing intended to be hermetically sealed and whose hermeticity can be visually observed by means of coloured heat seals.
The package of the invention is mainly intended for sterilization, primarily for hospital sterilization.
The purpose of the sterilization package is to provide a possibility of sterilizing a product in packed condition and to maintain its sterility after sterilization. Materials and seams used in the package must be sufficiently tight to prevent micro-organisms from penetrating into the package therethrough.
White paper and colourless plastic film or laminate are used at present. This means, however, that verification of hermiticity of the seams is very difficult. Coloured paper is also used but the sealing effect provided thereby is very weak. The use of a coloured film makes the manufacture more inconvenient than by dyeing an adhesive. By using a coloured adhesive it is possible to use standard films which are most suitable for each packing and sterilizing process. The object of the present invention is to provide a sterilization package on which it is possible to visually check the hermeticity of sea Is without additional equipment or tests and without destroying the package.
Characteristic of the invention is that the adhesive used in lamination is coloured.
The plastic laminate generally consists of a nonorientated polypropene film made by means of plane film process and an orientated polyester film, which are glue laminated together. The adhesive employed is dyed with a suitable pigment, which is soluble in the adhesive, so that the finished film laminate gets a light tone. In heat sealing, the regions of this film laminate, which are sealed against the paper, turn darker, the sealed regions thus being clearly distinguishable and can be visual ly checked, The laminate of the invention is manufactured by dry laminating two or more plastic films together.
The adhesive can be a glue intended for the lamination of flexible plastic films, possibly some 1 or 2 component polyester or polyurethane type of adhesive. The adhesive is mixed with a dyestuff which can be some soluble organic (metal) complex colouring agent.
Some generally used packing films have been mentioned above as examples. Naturally it is obvious that the basic films can be any film suitable for sterilization, such as polyethene and polyamide.
