Description
SPECIFICATION
Heating device for a-chute of apparatus for sorting granular material according to color
This invention relates to improvements in or relating to a chute of ari apparatus for sorting granular material according to color.
In one type of apparatus known in the artfor sorting granular material according to color, a hopper and a feeder for feeding granular material to be sorted, a trough-like chute down which the granular material slides and a photoelectric ejector for separating granular material of different color are arranged in the indicated order. This type of sorting apparatus has been known to have a tendency that the moisture contained in the granular material or powdery dust covering same causes dew formation on the inner surface of the chute and the powdery dust is lodged thereon as hard masses. The masses adhering to the inner surface of the chute dueto caking of the powdery dust offer resistance to smooth flow of the granular material and reduces the flow velocity thereof, thereby reducing the ability of the apparatus to sort out granular material of different colors. Also, the hard masses of powdery dust formed by caking cause the granular material to be scattered from the path of travel during the downward movement, thereby greatly reducing the precision with which sorting of the granular material according to color is carried out.
To increase the capacity of such apparatus for sorting granular material according to color with increased precision requires an increase in the flow velocity of granular material down the chute and a reduction in the sectional area of a flow of granular material shot out of the chute. When the flow of granular material grows small or is reduced in thickness, the degree to which the' granular material is exposed to light thrown by the photoelectric ejector against the granular material increases and the proportion of the granular material shot out of the chute and not exposed to the light is minimized.
This is conducive to increase precision with which the granular material is sorted according to color.
By maintaining the inner surface ofthe chute down which the granular material slides as smooth and free from obstacles as possible, it is possible to obtain a maximum flow velocity in the downward movement of the granular material and also to allow the apparatus to effect sorting of the granular material according to color to the best of its ability even if the flow of granular material shot out of the chute is rendered small and thin to increase the precision and accuracy with which sorting is effected.
This invention has as its object the provision of a heating device for a chute of an apparatus for sorting granular material according to color which is capable of directly or indirectly heating the chute to obviate the aforesaid disadvantages of the prior art.
The provision of a heating device makes it possible to avoid dew formation on the inner surface of the chute of the apparatus for sorting granular material according to color even if the moisture
contained in the granular material and powdery dust covering same is brought into contact with the inner
surface of the chute, because the chute is heated by
the heating device. The absence of dew which would othet\ovise be formed and cause caking of the
powdery dust on the inner surface of the chute enables the inner surface of the chute to be kept
clean at all times, sothat no obstacles are offered to
the smooth sliding movement of the granular mate
rial down the chute. Thus sorting of the granular
material according to color can be carried out
efficiently with a high degree of precision and
accuracy.
The foregoing and-still other advantages of the
present Invention will be made more apparent from
the following detailed explanation of the preferred
embodiments of the invention in connection with the
accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a sectional side view of the apparatus
for sorting granular material according to color
comprising one embodiment of the invention;
Figure 2 is a side view showing, on an enlarged
scale, the essential portions of another embodiment;
and
Figure 3 is a side view showing, on an enlarged
scale, the essential portions of still another embodi
ment.
Referring to Figure 1, an apparatus for sorting
granular material according to color generally desig
nated by the numeral 1 comprises a frame 2, a
hopper 3 disposed on the top of the frame 2 and a
vibratory trough feeder 4 connected to the lower end
of the hopper 3. A photoelectric ejecting device 5 is
contained in a housing 6 secured in the frame 2 in its
lower portion. A trough-shaped chute 8 in the form
of a letter V in cross section is supported by a
supporter 7 on the housing 6 of the photoelectric
ejecting device and disposed in-an inclined position
in such a mannerthat its upper end receives the
lower end of the vibratory trough feeder 4 and its
lower end terminates in the interior of the housing 6.
The photoelectric ejecting device 5 comprises a
light source 9 throwing a beam of light against a
path of flow A of granular material shot out of the
chute 8 into the housing 6, a light receiving element
10 for-receiving-the light reflected by or permeating
the granular material, and an ejector nozzle 11
actuated by a detection signal produced by the light
receiving element 10.The housing 6 is formed at its
lower end with a cylindrical granular material col
lecting member 12 and a granular material outlet
port 14, the granular material collecting member 12
being aligned with the path of flow A of the granular
material and having an outlet 13 for collecting
granular materiai of the desired color and the
granular material outlet port 14 discharging to
outside granular material of a color distinct from the
desired color which is blown offthe path of flow A of
the granular material.
The components-of the apparatus described
hereinabove are known and not novel.
However, in the embodiment shown in Figure 1,
an infrared ray irradiating device 15functioning as
heating means is arranged parallel to the underside
B of the chute 8 and.spaced apart therefrom a suitable distance 16. The irradiating device 15 is secured to the frame 2 by means of a support 17, to indirectly heat the chute 8.
Figure 2 shows another embodiment in which electric heating elements 19, such as nicrome wires, are arranged on the underside B of the chute 8 through an insulator 18, to directly heat the chute 8 from the underside.
Figure 3 shows still another embodiment comprising a plurality of eddy current inducing devices 20 arranged in side-by-side relation on a support frame 21 secured to the frame 2 by suitable supports, not shown. The eddy current inducing devices 21 are parallel to and spaced apart from the underside B of the chute 8 the suitable distance 16. In this embodiment, the chute 8 is indirectly heated by eddy currents induced therein by the eddy current inducing devices 20.
Operation of the apparatus for sorting granular material according to color will be described by referring to the embodiment shown in Figure 1. In explaining the operation, the apparatus will be described as handling grain ears of a desired color incorporated therein grain ears or foreign matter of colors different from the desired color. Grain ears are fed to the hopper 3 and the apparatus is actuated. The grain ears in the hopper 3 are supplied to the vibratory trough feeder 4 from which they flow downwardly into the upper end of the chute 8 by the vibratory action of the trough feeder 4. The grain ears then slide downwardly along the chute 8 of the
V-shape, and are shot out of the chute 8 at its lower end into the interior of the housing 6 along the path of flow A.The light source 9 of the photoelectric ejecting device 5 mounted in the housing 6 throws a beam of light onto the grain ears flowing along the path of flow A, and the light reflected by or permeating grain ears or foreign matter of a color different from the desired color is detected by the light receiving element 10 which produces a signel.
The signal produced by the light receiving element 10 actuates the ejector nozzle 11 connected to a compressor, not shown, so that an air current is ejected through the ejector nozzle 11 at an opportune time for blowing grain ears or foreign matter of different colors, to sort out grain ears according to color. The grain ears or foreign matter of different colors separated from the grain ears of the desired color in this fashion are discharged through the outlet port 14, and the grain ears of the desired color flow along the path of flow a into the cylindrical collecting member 12 from which they are discharged through the outlet 13 and transferred to the next processing stat in.
During the time the grain ears are sorted out according to color after sliding down the chute 8, the inner surface of the chute 8 is kept at a temperature higher than that of the grain ears, foreign matter and powdery dust by the action of the infrared ray irradiating device 15, electric heating elements 19 and eddy current inducing devices 20 shown in
Figures 1,2 and 3 respectively and functioning as heating means. This enables dew formation to be avoided which would otherwise be caused by the moisture contained in the grain ears, foreign matter or powdery dust. formation of no dew on the inner surface of the chute 3 makes it possible to keep the inner surface of the chute 8 clean at all times without hard masses being deposited thereon as a result of caking of the powdery dust. Thus no obstacles are provided to the smooth flow of the grain ears and foreign matter, so that sorting of the grain ears according to color can be effected with a high degree of precision and accuracy to the best of the ability of the apparatus.
