Abstract
In an "on-demand" ink-jet printer, a pair of piezo-electric elements (7 and 8) are fixed to opposite sides of the print head so that the application to the elements of a print signal varies the dimensions of the ink cavity (1b) through which ink continuously flows and thus causes the ink to be ejected from a nozzle (4) communicating with the cavity. The head may be formed from a pair of complementary shaped plates to which the elements (7, 8) are fixed. <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION Inlk jet prErllt:ers This invention relates to ink-jet printers and in particular to those of the so-called "on-demand" type wherein a print head is continuously supplied with a flow of ink, droplets of which can be ejaculated from a nozzle in response to an appropriate signal.
According to the invention in its broadest aspect, there is provided an ink-jet printer comprising a print head arranged to be supplied with a continuous flow of ink, droplets of which can be ejaculated from a nozzle in response to an appropriate signal, the head containing a cavity through which ink can pass and from which it can enter the nozzle and the signal being simultaneously applied to a pair of piezoelectric elements respectively fixed to either side of the print head adjacent the cavity whereby the resulting deformation of the piezo-electric elements changes the dimensions of the cavity and forces ink out of the nozzle.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Fig. 1 is an end elevation of the print head, and
Figs. 2a and 2b are elevations of the two halves of the print head.
The two halves ofthe print head are made of
Perspex (Registered Trade Mark) or similar material and each is formed with a tapered groove la orb interconnecting an inlet groove 2a orb and an outlet groove 3a orb. A nozzle groove 4a orb opens into the groove la orb. When the two halves are glued or otherwise joined together, they form a print head provided with a tapered cavity 1 interconnecting inlet and outlet ports 2 and 3 and a nozzle 4 communicating with the cavity 1. Perforated lugs Sa orb and Se orb assist in accurately locating the two halves before joining. Piezo-electric elements 7 and 8 are glued or otherwise attached to the two halves of the head.
In use, ink is supplied continuously to the head by two pumps (not shown) upstream and downstream respectively of the inlet and outlet ports 2 and 3. The cavity 1 is relatively shallow in proportion to the width of the head so as to produce a streamline flow of ink through it to maintain a concave meniscus at the nozzle 4. Ink leakage from the nozzle is prevented by the differential pressure obtained by using two F;lmps. The tapering of the cavity 1 results in an acceleration of the ink flow ti rough the cavity and the purging of any air bubbles.
When a voltage pulse is simultaneously applied to the piezo-electric elements 7 and 8 the latter are momentarily deformed thus changing the dimensions of the cavity 1 and forcing ink out of the nozzle 4. The dimensions of the nozzle, the duration and amplitude of the voltage pulse determine the size of the ink droplets ejaculated from the nozzle.
1. An ink-jet printer comprising a print head arranged to be supplied with a continuous flow of ink, droplets of which can be ejaculated from a nozzle in response to an appropriate signal, the head containing a cavity through which ink can continuously pass and from which it can enter the nozzle and the signal being simultaneously applied to a pair of piezo-electric elements fixed to either side of the print head adjacent the cavity whereby the resulting deformation of the piezo-electric elements changes the dimensions of the cavity and forces ink out ofthe nozzle.
2. An ink-jet printers claimed in claim 1, in which the cavity is tapered progressively from the ink inlet to the ink outlet so as to produce a progressive increase in the velocity of the ink flow as it passes the nozzle.
3. An ink jet printer comprising a print head sub stantially as described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
