Elastic ropes and cords. -In a process for forming tape, cord, yarn, rope, fabric or other material, unspun silk, cotton, or other suitable fibres arranged as slivers or yarns are taken from cops, reels, spools, or bobbins a, Fig. 1, led through a tension device b, passed through a hot water bath c, squeezed between rollers d, d', then passed through a dilute alkali bath c containing ammonia or other anti-coagulent to preserve the latex, then through a bath g of vulcanized rubber latex having an agitator w to maintain admixture of loading or like material. The surplus latex is removed by expressers k, k' and the strips dried in a chamber t in which they pass in a helical path around creels m, n, and are wound on spools o or the like. The creels m, n are maintained in proper condition by brushes s, Fig. 3, attached to their spindles by helical springs. The product may be in the form of narrow strips or tapes which may be moistened and spun into yarn or it may be produced in the form of a sheet from which yarns of the desired count may be obtained by dividing the sheet by suitable spaced knives y, Fig. 6, co-operating with a grooved roller v. The knives y rotate in a water bath R. The sheet is delivered from a holder h over a smoothing bar r and between tension rollers p. The narrow strips pass over tension rollers p' and are wound on a drum z. Sheets may be formed with the fibres laid in various directions, or they may be formed in known manner into strips of the thickness of single fibres, each individual fibre being thus encased in its own envelope of latex. The latex used may be vulcanized according to the process described in Specification 193,451, [Class 70, India-rubber &c.]. The yarns produced may be twisted together to form ropes and cords or they may be woven into fabric.
