Abstract

205,141. Robinson, C. S. June 12, 1922. Sulphur. - To obtain sulphur free from the impurities which prevent satisfactory combustion, the sulphur is volatilized from materials containing it in the free state, the necessary heat being provided by the combustion of the minimum proportion of the sulphur. Preferably the sulphur-containing material is maintained in continuous motion counter-current to the gas for effecting combustion. In an example, the crude sulphur is fed by the device 1 into a chamber 2, provided with shelves 3 over which it travels in counter-current to an air-supply entering by an opening 7 from the flues 4 within the walls of the chamber. The volatilized sulphur passes by way of a passage 9 to a condensing chamber 8 also airjacketed and fitted with a condenser 15. By passage through the jackets the air-supply is preheated. Molten sulphur is tapped off bv a pipe 14. If the plant is associated with a sulphuric acid plant, the jackets may be omitted. Instead of the above described apparatus, ordinary sulphur burners, such as the Herreshoff or Wedge furnaces, may be employed, but in all cases a condenser must be fitted.
