Abstract

205,059. Chenu, A. J. J. Oct. 3, 1922,. [Convention date]. Hydrogen.-The lifting gas of an airship is purified by passing it through a closed circuit containing a purifier which comprises an apparatus for liquefying any air contained in the lifting-gas. The purifying apparatus may be carried on a motor truck. The impurities may be replaced by additional lifting gas which may consist of Dowson gas after the elimination of the carbonmonoxide. The lifting gas in the case of airships having multiple gas bags is circulated from one gas chamber to another, the gas in each chamber being taken from the bottom and replaced at the top. Oxygen and nitrogen are removed by liquefaction in the apparatus shown in the Figure. The gas to be purified is drawn through a conduit 4 and compressed by a multiple-stage pump b, c, d cooled by jackets and water jets. The compressed gas is passed through a water separator e and a drying chamber f containing soda or lime which absorbs water and carbonic acid. The gases then pass through tubes g, extending through chambers p, l and through tubes h to a chamber i, the tubes h and chamber i being surrounded by a chamber n supplied with liquid air from a generating apparatus s. The purified gas escapes through a tube j to the chamber l, where it helps to cool the tubes g, and issues through the conduit 5. Air evaporating from the liquid in the chamber n, which may be kept under a depression, is led through a pipe o to the chamber p to cool the upper parts of the tubes g, and is withdrawn through a pipe q from which it may be conveyed to the generator s to be recondensed. The air liquefied in the chamber i may be withdrawn through a valve t and mixed with that in the chamber n or run to waste. The Specification, as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a), comprises also the removal of oxygen and nitrogen by means of carbide of calcium at a red heat or by means of calcium, magnesium, &c. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
