Abstract

A box from which sheet, foil or film material 24 from a roll 22 thereof may be dispensed has a member 19 which carries a serrated edge 21 disposed between the front of the lid 7 of the box and the front wall 2 thereof, and an exit slot 17 for the material in the rear wall 3 of the box. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Improvements relating to a box This invention relates to a box from which sheet foil or film material from a roll thereof may be dispensed.
Such boxes are commonly of card or cardboard material, cut from one or more blanks, and folded into shape and they frequently incorporate a member of metal or plastic having a serrated edge to enable a desired length of the material to be readily torn off. It is desirable that the member should be movable so that it is exposed for use but contained wholly within the box during transport thereof. Also for commercial use large heavy rolls of material have common-place, and stability difficulties of freestanding boxes can be frustrating to users.
It has been proposed to provide an exit slot for the material in the lid to such a box and to have the serrated edge of the member disposed at one edge of the lid but such an arrangement means that in use, after a length of material has been torn off, the next available part thereof extends externally of the box by a distance of about half the width of the lid.
This is a disadvantage, particularly with wide material since it reduces the likelihood of subsequent successful tears.
Accordingly one aspect of the present invention provides a box from which sheet, foil orfilm material from a roll thereof may be dispensed comprising front, rear, bottom and end walls and a lid hinged along the upper end of the rear wall, a member carrying a serrated edge being disposable between the front wall and the closed lid so that the edge extends outwardly of the box over substantially the entire length thereof and an exit slot for the material formed in the rear wall.
Preferably the lid is narrowerthan the bottom wall and the front and rear walls subtend acute angles with the bottom wall and obtuse angles with the closed lid.
The above and other aspects will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawing in which: Figure 1 is a perspective view of a box with the lid open and without the roll of material, Figure 2 is a similar view of the box with the lio shut and, Figure 3 is a partial section on the line III - III of Figure 2 but including the roll of material.
Referring to the drawings a box indicated generally at 1 is folded from a blank of card or cardboard material and has a front wall 2, a rear wall 3, a bottom 4, end walls 5 and 6 and a lid 7 hinged at 8 to the upper end of the rear wall 3. As shown in Figure 3 and lid 7 is narrower than the bottom wall 4 and the front and rear walls 2 and 3 subtend acute angles with the bottom wall and obtuse angles with the closed lid. The central parts of the end walls, as shown only in respect of the wall 6, are interanlly thickened by a flap 9 having a circular bearing aperture 10. The lid 7 has a front flap 11 and end flaps 12 formed with curved front edges 13 and part circular lower edges 14. Towards its end edges the lid 3 also has a pair of triangular press-in tabs 3a hinged at 3b.The rear wall 3 is formed with a longitudinally extending press-out tab 15 hinged at 16to provide an exit slot 17. The bottom 4 has a pair of "non-stick" feet, one of which is shown at 18.
A stiff card insert 19 is disposed within the box to lie alongside the front wall 2 and has a strip of metal or plastic 20 along its upper end; the upper edge 21 of the strip being serrated and projecting outwardly of the box when the flap 11 of the lid extends inside the insert 19. The inset 19 may be bent in the direction of the arrow 'A' so that the serrated strip 20 may be disposed within the box, beneath the lid 3 for package and transport.
A roll 22 of, for example, a transparent film, is mounted on a central tube 23, the ends of which project beyond the roll and may be forced by distortion of the box into engagement with the bearing apertures 10. When the lid 7 is shut the flaps 12 extend over the exposed ends of the tube 23 to assist in holding the roll firmly in place. The roll is disposed so as to uncoil in the direction of the arrow 'B' and when it is desired to use film from the roll the insert 19 is located in its operative position as shown. The tabs 3a are pressed inwardly and the tab 15 is pulled out to expose the exit slot 17. Film 24 is then led out of this slot, up the rear wall 3 and over the lid 7. Initially it may be pulled past the serrated edge 21 as indicated by clain lines 24a and torn off against this edge.Thereafter with the box 1 on a horizontal surface and retained against sliding by the feet 18, an operative may readily pick up each side edge of the film by inserting a finger into the holes left by the depressed tabs 3a and draw off and tear the required length.
By having the exposed film run over part of the rear wall and the lid it is found, particularly with wide rolls, that a stabilising influence is exerted enabling an operative to pull very flimsy material and tear it with reasonable accuracy.
1. A box from which sheet, foil or film material from a roll thereof may be dispensed comprising front, rear, bottom and end walls and a lid hinged along the upper end of the rear wall, a member carrying a serrated edge being disposable between the front wall and the closed lid so that the edge extends outwardly of the box over substantially the entire length thereof and an exit slot for the material formed in the rear wall.
2. A box according to claim 1 in which the lid is narrower than the bottom wall and the front and rear walls subtend acute angles with the bottom wall and obtuse angles with the closed lid.
