Abstract

A cover bag for substantially enclosing an ostomy bag is made of woven or non-woven material incorporating activated carbon particles or granules therein. The cover bag may be made of carbon cloth, and preferably includes a front wall 10 and a rear wall 16 with a cutout region 22 dimensioned and positioned to allow passage of a coupling whereby an ostomy bag can be connected to a user. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Cover Bag This invention provides a cover bag for enclosing an Ostomy bag.
The term "ostomy bag" is used herein to refer to a bag for recovering waste matter from a human body which is discharged through a stoma produced as a result of surgery. Examples of ostomy bags are illustrated in Patent Applicaton No.13411/77 Serial No.1,571,657. It is desirable to vent gases from such bags but at the same time it is desirable to minimise or remove odours from such gases. There have been various approaches to this problem, in fact the prior art is replete with attempts to overcome this problem, and many designs of bag have been suggested which include vents to allow escape of flatus gases and filters to attempt to remove odours therefrom. Such attempts, though numerous, have not been wholly successful.Examples of prior suggestions are British Patent Specifications Nos 239,582, 648,718,843,962, 1,117,204, 1,212,904, 1,363,644, 1,379,464, 1,405,032, 1,416,594, 1,462,492 and 1,471,839. The present invention is based on an entirely different approach.
According to the invention, there is provided a cover bag for substantially enclosing an ostomy bag, the cover bag made of woven or non-woven material incorporating activated carbon particles or granules therein.
Also according to the invention, a cover bag for substantially enclosing an ostomy bag is made of carbon cloth as herein defined.
In this specification, "carbon cloth as herein defined" is to be taken to mean activated fibrous carbon as disclosed or as claimed in British Patent No.1,301,101.
The invention will be better understood from the following non-limiting description an example thereof given with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a view of a cover bag according to the invention; and Figures 2 and 3 are diagrammatic cross-section on the lines 11- II and Ill-Ill of Figure 1.
The illustrated cover bag is made wholly of woven or non-woven material as aforesaid, and has a front well 11 which is contiguous with a top hood wall 12 and a pocket wall 14. It also has a rear wall 16 which is secured to the top edge 18 of the cover bag except over a region 20 which defines a space 22 to accept a coupling by which an ostomy bag is connected to the user thereof.
The pocket defined by the lower part of the front wall 11 and the pocket wall 14 in practical use of the cover bag supports and receives the lower end of the ostomy bag.
The cover bag may be made by conventional sewing techniques, and bias binding or other reinforcement may be included as needed. Bias binding is indicated at 24 and 26 in Figure 1. The top edge of the pocket wall 14 is indicated at 28.
In accordance with sound sewing practice, all unfinished hems are to be located on the inside of the bag cover, and ends of machining runs are to be tied off.
It will be understood that the exact dimensions illustrated are not critical and so long as the cover bag satisfactorily accommodates an ostomy bag therein, any suitable dimensions may be chosen.
In use, when the user fits a new ostomy bag, he or she punctures a hole in the upper region of the ostomy bag which will allow any gases which may acculumulate therein to escape. These gases in escaping are obliged to pass through the wall of the cover bag, no matter where the hole has been punched, and in so doing are largely or wholly deodorised. Such a cover bag is light and easy to wear, and may be easily mass-produced at reasonable cost.
