Description

SPECIFICATION An improved fastener assembly The present invention relates to an improved fastener assembly which is particularly, although not exclusively, suitable for securing pipes, air lines, cables, or similar articles (hereinafter referred to, for convenience, in the following description and claims as pipes) to an automobile chassis.
Known pipe fastener arrangements suffer from the disadvantages that attachment to the vehicle chassis is often time-consuming and therefore costly, they can only accommodate one size of pipe cross-section, the pipes are often not securely held in the fastener or it is difficult to remove the pipe from the chassis when required.
The object of the present invention is to overcome the disadvantages set out above.
The present invention consists in a fastener assembly comprising a body member having a surface for locating one or more pipes, a readily removable clip member for the or each pipe, said clip member having spaced legs engaging the body member which fixedly locate the pipe on the pipe location surface of the body member and means for attaching the body member to a fixture.
In the accompanying drawings:~ Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a fastener assembly according to the present invention mounted on a vehicle chassis member, Fig. 2 is a cross-section through the fastener assembly shown in Fig. 1, Fig. 3 is an underside plan view of the fastener assembly shown in Fig. 1, Fig. 4 is a front view of the adjustable clamp shown in Figs. 1 and 3, Fig. 5 is a side view of Fig. 4, Fig. 6 is a front view of the fixed clamp shown in Figs. 1 and 3, Fig. 7 is a side view of Fig. 6, and Fig. 8 is an end view of the fastener assembly retained in position on the chassis member by means of the clamps shown in Figs. 4 to 7.
In carrying the invention into effect, by way of example, the fastener assembly comprises a hollow plastics body member 10 of generally rectangular configuration and having an attachment surface 12 in one plane and a pipe location surface 14 in another plane spaced therefrom. The extremities of the body member are flanged at 16 to provide attachment areas to the vehicle chassis as hereinafter described with a centrally disposed portion 1 6a provided for the same purpose.
The pipe location surface 14 of the body member 10 is provided with a plurality of spaced, transversely extending, raised arcuate formations 18 which, in use, receive a portion of the periphery of the pipe 20 being fastened. Each arcuate formation 18 is provided adjacent each side thereof with a transversely extending aperture 21 of rectangular configuration, the opposed sides of which are angled at 22 to guide and lock a clip member or saddle 24 of plastics material therein as hereinafter described.
Each clip member 24 is of 'U'-shaped configuration with springy legs 26 interconnected by a bright portion 28, the legs 26 extending from the ends of the latter and, when relaxed, diverging from each other at an angle of 10 degrees. The outer surface of each leg 26 is provided with a plurality of serrations 30 extending across the leg and the free extremity of each leg is provided with an angled "lead-in" portion 32 which assists location of the clip member 24 in the rectangular body apertures 21 referred to above. In use, the pipe 20 is firmly gripped between the bright portion 28 and the arcuate formation 18 when the legs 26 of the clip member 24 are pushed into the body apertures 21 and retained by the serrations 30 engaging the angled sides 22.It will be seen that a smaller diameter pipe 20a can also be firmly gripped merely by pushing the clip member 24 further into the body member 10.
The bright portion 28 of the 'U'-shaped member 24 is thickened and provided with oppositely directed wing portions 34 for ease of handling. A slot 36 which extends parallel to the serrations 30 is provided between the wing portions 34 so that when if it is desired to remove the pipe 20 from the chassis, the clip 24 can be readily removed, merely by cutting through the wing portions into the slot 36. The two legs 26 can then be removed separately.
The body member 10 may be screwed to a chassis member 38 through apertures 40 provided in the end flanges 16 and central portion 16a or, alternatively, may be attached to the chassis member 38 by means of fixed clamps 42 accommodated, respectively, in transversely extending slots 44 in the end flanges 16 and an adjustable clamp 46 accommodated in a transversely extending slot 48 in the central portion 16a.
Each fixed clamp 42 comprises an 'L'-shaped portion 50 which, in use, overlies and engages one side 52 of the chassis member 38 and an integral bifurcated portion 54 which, in use, is received in the slot 44 of the body member 10. The bifurcated portion 54 is fixedly located in the body member 10 by means of an abutment 56 (shown in the shape of an arrow) which engages one side of the body member 10 adjacent the slot 44 and by the ends 54a of the two arms 54b forming the bifurcated portion 54 which engage the opposite side of the body member 10. The two arms 54b are springy and to facilitate entry into their respective slots 44, the ends are tapered and formed as a pawl which prevents removal of the clamp 42 until the arms are pressed towards each other.
The adjustable clamp 46 comprises an 'L'shaped portion 58 which, in use, overlies and engages the opposite side 60 of the chassis member 38 and an integral centrally slotted portion 62 which, in use, is received in the centrally disposed slot 48 of the body member 10.
The outer surface of one of the sides of the centrally slotted portion 62 has serrations 64 which engage an angled surface 66 of the body slot to retain the adjustable clamp 46 in the required position. One surface of the centrally slotted portion 62 is provided with two rows of castellated abutments 68 which, in use, extend through the slot in the body and enable the clamp 46 to be prised into tight engagement with the chassis member 38 by means of a hand tool, such as a screwdriver inserted between the abutments 68 and adjacent outer surface of the body member 10.
