Description
SPECIFICATION
Improvements in or relating to containers
The invention relates to containers formed by securing together prefabricated panels.
According to the invention there is provided a panel for a container, the panel being rectangular and generally planar and having a channel extending around the periphery of the panel and on one side of the general plane of the panel, the channel having a base portion to provide a first securing flange parallel to the general plane of the panel and extending around the periphery of the panel, and and outer wall portion to provide a second securing flange perpendicular to the general plane of the panel and extending around the periphery of the first securing flange, the arrangement being such that panels are securable together with respective planes mutually perpendicular by securing the first securing flange of one panel to the second securing flange of the other panel along adjacent edges of the panels, and that adjacent panels are securable together with respective planes parallel by securing together the second securing flanges of the panels along adjacent edges of the panels.
The panel may be of glass reinforced plastics material.
The invention further provides a container comprising panels according to the invention secured together, the container comprising at least one base panel and side panels secured to the base panel or panels and perpendicular thereto, the first securing flange of each side panel being secured to the second securing flange of the or the associated base panel along adjacent edges of the associated panels, the channels of the base and side panels opening outwardly of the container, and means to secure adjacent side panels together.
Each joint is preferably sealed by sealing means arranged on the internal side thereof.
The sealing means preferably comprises a sealant applied to each joint on the inside of the container.
Each panel is preferably formed with a chamfer surface extending around the periphery of the panel between the first and second securing flanges on the outside of the channel such that at a joint between two panels with the second securing flange of one panel lying against either the first or the second securing flange of the other panel, a groove of substantially V-shape cross-section is formed for the sealant.
The chamfer angle may be 45 to the general plane of the panel.
The means for securing adjacent side panels together at edges of the container preferably comprises a flange member shaped to provide a pair of elongate connecting flanges lying in mutually prependicular planes, one of said connecting flanges being secured to the second securing flange of one side panel and the other connecting flange being secured to the second securing flange of the other side panel.
The panels are preferably secured together by means of bolts passing through respective securing or connecting flanges.
By way of example, one embodiment of a panel and a container according to the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of an open container;
Figure 2 is a perspective view of a panel;
Figure 3 is a sectional view of the container along the line Ill-Ill of Figure 1 partly cut away; and
Figure 4 is a plan view of an edge assembly showing a joint between side panels.
A container generally indicated at 10 comprises six moulded, pre-fabricated panels 11 all of which have the same profile. The panels 11 are preferably of glass reinforced plastics material, although it will be appreciated that other materials may be used. The container comprises two base panels and four side panels.
A single panel 11 is shown in Figure 2. Each panel 11 is rectangular and generally planar, having a planar centre portion 12 and a channel 13 extending around the periphery of the centre portion 12. The channel 13 is defined by an inner wall portion 14 extending around the periphery of the centre portion 12 and lying obliquely to the general plane of the panel, a base portion lying parallel to the general plane of the panel to provide a first securing flange 15 extending around the periphery of the panel and an outer wall portion lying perpendicular to the general plane of the panel to provide a second securing flange 16 extending around the periphery of the panel.
The arrangement of the securing flanges 15 and 16 is such that two panels 11 may be secured together with their general planes parallel by securing the second securing flanges 16 of the two panels together along adjacent edges and that two panels may be secured together with respective planes neatly perpendicular by securing the first securing flange of one panel to the second securing flange of the other panel along adjacent edges of the panels.
In the container 10, the base panels are secured together by bolting through the adjacent second securing flanges 16 and the side panels are secured to the base panels by bolting through the first securing flange 15 of each side panel and an associated second securing flange 16 of an associated base panel. Bolt holes 17 are formed in each panel before assembly of the container as shown in
Figure 2. Figure 2, in fact, shows holes 17 formed for a base panel with all the holes 17 being formed in the second securing flange 16. For a side panel, holes are formed in the first securing flange 15 along the longer sides of the panel.
Reinforcing ribs 18 provide additionally support in the region of the bolt holes 17.
The joint between the base panels and a base panel and a side panel is shown in more detail in
Figure 3. The peripheral channel 13 extends to one side only of the planar centre portion 12 of the panel and the dimensions of the channel 13 are such that the free edges of the second securing flange 16 lie in the plane of the centre portion 12. This allows base panels to lie flat on a support surface such as a planar base or a set of joists. The material of each panel 11 is thicker in the region of the first and second securing flanges 15 and 16 to provide increased strength in the regions of securement.
A chamfer surface 19 extending around the periphery of the panel is provided on the outside of the channel 13 between the first and second securing flanges 15 and 16 respectively. The chamfer angle is preferably 45" to the general plane of the panel and the arrangement is such that a joint between two panels in which the second securing flange 16 of one panel lies against either the first or the second securing flange of the other panel, a groove of substantially V-shape cross-section is formed. This groove in each case is filled with sealant material 20 gunned over the joint after the container is assembled. It is also possible to gun the sealant 20 over the joints during assembly of the panels so that the sealant is squeezed from between the securing flanges and into the groove.A preferred type of sealant is a polyurethane sealant which cures after several hours, but it will be appreciated that a large variety of sealants would be suitable for this purpose.
Figure 4 is a plane view of an edge joint between two side panels. In order to join two side panels together a flange member 21 is required. The flange member 21 has flanges 22 and 23 arranged at right angles to one aother and the side panels are secured together by bolting through the flanges 22 and 23 and associated second securing flanges 16 of the side panels 11. The flange member 21 has a chamfer surface 24 between the flanges 22 and 23 and this chamfer surface 24 forms with chamfer surfaces 19 of the side panels a sealant groove into which sealant 20 may be applied.
The peripheral channel 13 of each panel allows the
bolt connections to be always on the outside of the sealant lien and thereby prevents formation of a leak
path for fluid from a container. The rolled edge of the peripheral channel also forms a stiffener along the top edge of the container. Across tie at the top of the container may be necessary to provide lateral stiff
ness to the container and this is particularly necessary where a large number of panels form a large container.
A cover (not shown) may be provided for the tank
and one or more inlets and outlets may also be
provided.
The advantage of this embodiment of a container
according to the invention is that the same shape of
panel may be used for the base and sides of the
container, but the base panels lie flat upon a support
surface and that the design allows the use of wide
pitch bolts capable of carrying fluid loads exerted of
a container but not of forming a watertight seal, the
sealing being effective by using a gunned sealant fillet applied during or after assembly of the container.
