Description
SPECIFICATION
A frame for a scaffolding work structure
This invention relates to a frame for a scaffolding work structure. This invention also relates to scaffolding work structures when provided with one or more of the frames.
Scaffolding work structures are well known and they are composed of a plurality of frames. The frames may have horizontal members and these horizontal members are plain on their outer surface and they are usually of circular, square or rectangular cross section. The horizontal members are sometimes used for enabling persons to climb the scaffolding work structures and it would be advantageous if the horizontal members were provided with an anti-slip surface acting at right angles to the horizontal members.
It is an aim of the present invention to provide a frame for a scaffolding work structure, which frame has horizontal members which are provided with an anti-slip surface acting at right angles to the horizontal members.
Accordingly, this invention provides a frame for a scaffolding work structure, the frame having a plurality of horizontal members, at least the top surface of each horizontal member having extruded grooves extending longitudinally of the horizontal member, the grooves extending into the top surface of the horizontal members such that they do not affect the outside dimensions of the horizontal members, and the walls of the horizontal members adjacent the grooves being thickened internally to reinforce the horizontal members adjacent the grooves.
By ensuring that the outside dimensions of the horizontal members are not affected, various pieces of apparatus that form part of the work structure or that are mounted on the work structure and that are made of standard fixed dimensions can continue to be used on the frame and the scaffolding work structure ofthe present invention. By internally thickening the walls of the horizontal members as aforesaid, the elongate members are not weakened by the grooves.
Preferably, the horizontal members will be of circular cross section although it is to be appreciated that horizontal members having other cross sections, for example square or rectangular, can be employed.
Advantageously, the frame is such that each horizontal member has an extruded flat portion located between the grooves. The flat portion is for receiving locating pins. These locating pins may be riveted in position. The locating pins usually have flat square bases so that they then fit securely on the flat portion. The locating pins are for facilitating the location of various pieces of apparatus on the frame and the scaffolding work structure of the invention.
The horizontal members can be provided with the grooves around their entire outer surface but usually this will not be necessary since it will only be a top portion of the surface of each horizontal member that will be engaged by a person climbing the scaffolding work structures.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described solely by way of example and with reference to accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 shows a pair of frames mounted on top of each other and forming part of a scaffolding work structure; and
Figure2 is a cross section through a horizontal member forming part of a frame in accordance with the invention.
Referring to Figure 1, there are shown two frames 2 mounted on top of one another. Each frame 2 comprises a pair of upright members 4,6 and four horizontal members 8. The horizontal members 8 are in pairs as illustrated and the various pairs of horizontal members 8 are braced by struts 10. The uppermost horizontal member 8 of each frame 2 is provided with a plurality of locating pins 12 which are riveted in position and which are for locating various pieces of apparatus such for example as hooks on the ends of ladders onto the frames 2.
The frames 2 illustrated in Figure 1 are of known construction and a person climbing these frames may conceivably slip. The main danger arises if the person slips in a direction which is at right angles to the horizontal members. Figure 2 illustrates how the horizontal members can be modified to provide them with an anti-slip surface.
Referring now to Figure 2, it will be seen that the horizontal member 8 has been provided with a top surface 14 having extruded grooves 16 which extend longitudinally of the horizontal member 8. The grooves 16 extend into the surface of the horizontal member 8 such that the grooves 16 do not affect the outside dimensions of the horizontal member 8. The wall 18 of the horizontal member 8 is thickened internally at the portion 20, which portion 20 is adjacent the grooves 16 and is effective to reinforce the horizontal member 8 adjacent the grooves 16.
The horizntal member 8 can easily be formed as an extrusion with the grooves 16 and the internal reinforced portion 20 being extruded to shape. Since the portion 20 projects into the otherwise circular interior 22 of the horizontal memberS, any pieces of scaffolding apparatus that would normally be inserted into the interior 22 can be machined or otherwise produced to allow for the thickened portion 20.
It will be seen from Figure 2 that the horizontal member 8 is produced with a flat portion 24 which extends in the direction of th grooves 16 and which is positioned between the grooves 16. This flat portion 24 is especially advantageous for receiving the locating pins 12 which usually have flat square bases and which thus sit firmly on the flat portion 24.
It is to be appreciated that the embodiment of the invention described above with reference to the drawings has been given by way of example only and that modifications may be effected. Thus, for example, the grooves 16 could be provided around the entire outer surface of the horizontal member 18 and the frames 2 illustrated in Figure 1 can be of a different design.
