Abstract

A ferrule for securing to a stripped end portion of a stranded conductor is cut from an elongate metal strip 1 of metal or metal alloy which has a multiplicity of longitudinally spaced fingers 3 projecting laterally from each of its side edges. The fingers 3 along each side edge of the strip 1 are of such a shape and size and are so staggered with respect to the fingers along the other side edge of the strip that, when the strip is transversely cut to form a ferrule and the ferrule is applied to and folded and compressed around an elongate conductor, the fingers of the ferrule will interdigitate and the ferrule grip the conductor. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Improvements in or relating to ferrules.
This invention relates to ferrules suitable for use in terminating or joining elongate electrical conductors and is especially, but not exclusively, concerned with ferrules for securing together the strands at an end portion of a stranded electric Conductor in order to facilitate insertion of said end portion in a bore or tunnel in an electric terminal or connector.
According to the present invention we provide, for use in the manufacture of ferrules, an elongate strip of metal or metal alloy which has a multiplicity of longitudinally spaced fingers projecting laterally from each of its longitudinally extending side edges, the fingers along each side edge of the strip being of such a shape and size and being so staggered with respect to the fingers along the other side edge of the strip that, when the strip is transversely cut to form a ferrule and the ferrule is applied to and folded and compressed around an elongate conductor, the fingers of the ferrule will interdigitate and the ferrule grip the conductor.
Preferably, all the fingers are substantially the same shape and size as one another and preferably, also, all the gaps between adjacent longitudinally spaced fingers are substantially the same shape and size as the fingers.
The laterally extending side edges of each finger preferably lie substantially normal to the longitudinal axis of the strip and are preferably of substantially the same length as one another. The lateral dimension of each finger preferably lies in the range 0.25 W to 0.35 W, where W is the overall width of the strip.
Where, as is preferred, the fingers and the gaps between the fingers have substantially the same longitudinal dimensions as one another, by transversely cutting the strip along two opposed laterally extending side edges of fingers lying on opposite side edges of the strip, a ferrule can be obtained of any desired length nl, where I is the longitudinal dimension of each finger and gap and n is the total number of fingers and gaps along one side edge of the ferrule. Preferably I lies in the range 0.15 Wto 0.25 W. Thus, a ferrule can be cut from the strip to any desired length.
For ease of manufacture and for ease of application of a ferrule to an elongate conductor, preferably the strip is made of brass or of copper or a copper-based alloy. Preferably, the strip is sufficiently flexible for the strip to be coiled on a reel.
The invention also includes a ferrule when transversely cut from the elongate strip as hereinbefore described.
The invention further includes a method of applying a ferrule to an end portion of an elongate electric conductor, which method comprises feeding an elongate strip as hereinbefore described in the direction of its length, stopping travel of the strip and placing an end portion of an elongate conductor over a predetermined length of the central portion of the strip, and simultaneously transversely cutting said strip to said predetermined length, or to a length greater than said predetermined length, and transversely folding and compressing the ferrule so formed around said end portion of the conductor in such a way that the fingers of the ferrule interdigitate and the ferrule grips said end portion of the conductor.
When the ferrule is compressed around the end portion of the conductor, the materiai of the ferrule is squeezed in a longitudinal direction to cause the interdigitating fingers to lock together.
Where the strip is transversely cut to a length greater than said predetermined length, the ferrule can be used in jointing two elongate electrical conductors by placing an end portion of a second conductor over the central portion of that part of the length of the ferrule that has not been transversely folded and compressed around the end portion of the first conductor, and transversely folding and compressing said part of the ferrule around said end portion of the second conductor in such a way that the fingers of said part interdigitate and the ferrule grips said end portions of the second conductor.
The overall width of the strip having regard to the diameter of the end portion of the elongate conductor may be such that the folded fingers of the ferrule only partially interdigitate or may be such that the folded fingers partially overlie the central portion of the ferrule. Consequently, the elongate strip may be employed for securing ferrules to conductors having any diameter within a limited range of diameters. The ferrule can therefore be used to joint two conductors whose diameters are different from one another but lie within said limited range of diameters.
The invention is further illustrated by a description, by way of example, of a preferred elongate metal strip with reference to the accompanying drawing, in which: - Figure 1 is a fragmental isometric view of the strip, and Figure 2 is an isometric view of a ferrule transversely cut from the strip and folded round an end portion of a stranded conductor.
The strip 1 shown in Figure 1 is made of brass and has a centralportion 2 and fingers 3 projecting laterally from its longitudinally extending side edges, the fingers along one side edge being staggered with respect to the fingers along the other side edge. The fingers 3 are rectangular in shape and adjacent fingers define gaps 4 of a similar shape and size.
The ferrule 5 shown in Figure 2 has been transversely cut from the strip 1 shown in Figure 1 in such a way that one side edge of the ferrule has two longitudinally spaced fingers 3 and the other side edge of the ferrule has a single finger 3 centrally disposed between its ends. The ferrule 5 has been folded transversely and compressed around an end portion 6 of a stranded conductor so that the fingers 3 interdigitate and the ferrule grips said end portion to secure together the wires 7. The end portion 6 of the stranded conductor with the ferrule 5 secured therearound can now be readily inserted in the bore or tunnel of an electric terminal or connector.
