Abstract

A hair roller comprises a cylindrical body portion (10) having an at least substantially uniform diameter throughout its length, said cylindrical body portion being provided with a helical hair guide along which, in use, a strand of hair is wound in adjacent turns and which prevents displacement of the wound strand in a direction longitudinal of the body portion, and hair end securing means (18) provided at one end of the roller body portion to secure the free ends of said strand. The helical guide may be a groove (22) or a helical ridge formed on the body portion and where the body portion is hollow, a clip may be used to assist in retaining the hair in position on the roller. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Roller The present invention is concerned with improvements in or relating to a roller for treating hair, more especially, but not exclusively for use in imparting a permanent wave to human hair.
Rollers for this use are known in the art and are commonly referred to as "perming" rollers. One widely known roller consists of a plastics moulding having an elongated, generally cylindrical body which is waisted towards its central region. One end of the roller includes an enlarged head which receives one end of an elastic or elasticated member and the other end of the roller includes a projection over which the other, free end of the elastic member may be removably secured. In use, the roller is rolled along a strip of hair to be "permed" and around the waisted central region of the cylindrical body and once a suitable length of hair has been so wrapped the elastic member is stretched along the length of the roller over the wrapped turns of hair, the free end of the elastic member being removably secured to the projection on the roller as described above.
One disadvantage with the above described roller is that the hair to be "permed" tends to be positioned in the central region of the roller. This results in the innermost part of the rolled hair, i.e.
that closest to the roller body, being untreated or only partially treated with a permanent waving solution, neutralising solution, heat and then rinsing fluid.
In accordance with the present invention there is provided a roller for treating hair, said roller having a cylindrical body portion having an at least substantially uniform diameter throughout its length, said cylindrical body portion being provided with a helical hair guide means along which, in use, a strand of hair is wound in adjacent turns and which prevent displacement of the wound strand in a direction longitudinal of the body portion, and hair end securing means provided at one end of the roller body portion to secure the free ends of said strand.
The roller body may be preferably moulded in a single-part from plastics material. The roller body may be solid or conveniently be hollow with one closed end. In this way one limb of a hair clip may be placed inside the roller body and the other limb outside to enable rolled hair to be clamped to the roller body.
The means for retaining hair on the outside surface of the roller body may comprise a helical formation extending along the length of the roller body.
The helical formation may comprise a groove or alternatively a raised band or ridge.
In one example, the body of the roller may be flanged at one end to provide an abutment against which hair may be positioned when the roller is being wound. In this embodiment of the invention a plurality, preferably two, rows of teeth are provided on the body adjacent the flanged end to enable the firstturn orturns of hairto grip thereon.
In an alternative example, and end portion of the roller may be provided with an oblique slit through which a strand of hair passes at a portion of its length adjacent the hair roots, the remainder of the strand being wound in a helical manner around the body of the roller.
The means for securing hair rolled on the roller may comprise a head portion at the end of the roller body remote from the flange or slit, a resilient, reversible cup being removably attachable over the head portion by way of an aperture in a central portion of the cup. If desired, small holes may be provided in the cup to enable treatment solution to soak through to hair clamped onto the roller body by the cup.
Finally, when hair has been secured to the roller, a hair clip extending the whole length thereof may be placed overthe hair and clipped to the roller body.
The invention will now be described further with reference to the accompanying drawings. It will be understood that the description is given by way of example only and not by way of limitation.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a side elevational view of a roller according to a first example according to the invention and showing a resilient cup in an inoperative condition to enable a strand of hairto be wound on the roller; Figure 2 is a viewsimilarto Figure 1 but with the resilient cup in a hair securing position; Figure 3 shows a second example of a roller according to the invention.
Figures 1 and 2 show a roller which is moulded in a single piece from rigid plastics material. The roller has a body 10 having a flange 12 at a first end thereof and two rows of teeth 14 adjacent thereto (only one row shown). The second end of the roller has a head portion 16 over which a reversible, resilient cup 18 is removably received. The walls of the cup are apertured at 20. A helical groove 22 extends the full length of the roller, i.e. from the flange 12 to the head portion 16.
In use, a strand of hairto be permed or otherwise treated is held outstretched from the scalp. The roller is then placed againstthe strand adjacentthe hair roots, and the roller is rolled along the strand with, so far as possible, adjacent rurns of hair arranged in side-by-way relationship along the length of the roller. When the strand of hair has been rolled on, the cup 18 is reversed to the position shown in Figure 2 to retain the free end of the strand in position on the rolled, thus preventing the strand from unrolling. If desired, a clip (its position indicated in chain-dotted lines) may be used to clip the length of the hair strand to the roller.
The roller shown in Figure 3 comprises a body portion 24 having a helical ridge 26. The roller is otherwise similar to that shown in Figures 1 and 2 with the exception that in place of the teeth 14, a slit 28 is provided at the first end of the roller body lying at an oblique angle to the longitudinal centre line of the roller.
In use, the strand of hair to be wound onto the body portion 24 is received in the slit 28 at a portion of its length adjacent its roots and the remainder of the strand is wound around the roller following the helical ridged 26 and the free ends of the strand are secured by a resilient cup (shown in broken lines at 30). A clip may also be used to ensure that the strand does not accidentally unwind from the roller.
