Abstract

Suction apparatus of the type in which ploughing cutters act in advance of the trailing suctionhead has the cutters so mounted that any one or more of them can move out of the way when an obstruction is encountered. The suction head 4 carries a plate 9 extending from a detachable mouthpiece 8 to an upper flange 6 and fitted with brackets 11 between which the cutters 12 are independently pivoted, preferably in staggered relation as shown. The cutters bear against members 16 of hard wood or like material adapted to shear under pressure due to an obstruction, whereupon the cutters swing upwardly through openings 17 in the plate 9 into compartments 14 formed in the space between the plate 9 and the wall 10 of the suction head.
