Abstract

203,786. Chapman, W. A. June, 14, 1922. Rods, locking.-Relates to means for locking relatively slidable members, of the kind in which single or oppositely acting gripping elements, pivotally carried by one of the members, are formed with apertures through which the other member passes and, when tilted, grip such member to prevent relative movement in one or both directions, and comprises an arrangement in which the gripping element or elements are provided with round hardened steel cross-bars forming wearing surfaces in the apertures, and are formed with elongated channels or grooves providing the engaging means for the pivotal supports. In the form shown in Fig. 1, a box-like frame A slidably mounted on a stationary bar C carries a single gripping element B normally preventing movement in one direction. The round steel wearings bars 2 lining the aperture 8 may be inserted in transversely drilled holes or in recesses provided for them in casting or forging the gripping element. A groove or channel 3 provides the pivotal connection with a fulcrum pin 1. The gripping element may normally be tilted by a spring D, by gravity, or manually. Lugs 4, 5 provide for the attachment of parts to the frame A. Alternatively, the frame A may be provided with flanges for attachment to a fixed part and the bar C may constitute the slidable member. A pair of oppositely tilting gripping elements may be provided to prevent motion in both directions. In the form shown in Fig. 7, the gripping element is carried by a hooked bracket A<1> which comprises the stationary member, or the arrangement shown may be inverted, in which case the part A<1> would comprise the slidable member.
