Abstract

A corrugated board sheet 12 comprises a liner 2 which is adhesively fixed to one face of a corrugated layer 1, the other face of the corrugated layer having a plurality of reinforcing strips 6, 5 adhesively fixed thereto. The corrugated board sheet which may comprise two or more corrugated layers adhesively secured together, may be in the form of a blank having creases 3, 4 for a corrugated board box or a part thereof, the reinforcing strips then being positioned along the crease lines of the blank. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Corrugated board sheets The present invention relates to corrugated board sheets and, in particular, to corrugated board sheets which have a single face.
Corrugated board boxes which are formed from single faced corrugated board sheets, in which the corrugated layer forms the innermost side of the box, are known. This single faced corrugated board sheet does not have a bottom liner and so lacks strength. Furthermore, it does not run smoothly in a corrugator or a box manufacturing machine, so that it is difficult to print on the face thereof or to crease the sheet.
We have found that if a number of narrow strips are adhesively fixed to the corrugated layer of a single faced corrugated board sheet, the sheet is strengthened and a corrugated board box can be formed therefrom which possesses the above advantages.
Accordingly, the present invention provides a corrugated board sheet which comprises a liner which is adhesively fixed to one face of a corrugated layer, the other face of the corrugated layer having a plurality reinforcing strips adhesively fixed thereto.
Preferably, the corrugated board sheets of the present invention are in the form of blanks for corrugated board boxes, the reinforcing strips being positioned along the crease lines of the blanks.
The present invention will be further described with reference to the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 shows a partially cut away plan view of a board of the present invention; Figure 2 shows an oblique view of a corrugated board box made from corrugated board in accordance with the present invention; and Figure 3 shows enlarged sectional views of parts of the corrugated board of the present invention.
Referring to Figure 1, a corrugated board sheet in accordance with the present invention comprises a single faced corrugated board 12 which comprises a liner 2 which is adhesively fixed to one face of a corrugated layer 1. To the other face of the corrugated layer 1 there are attached narrow reinforcing strips 6 which are positioned so that they may form the top crease 3 and bottom crease 4 of a portion of a corrugated box. If desired, other narrow strips 5 may be attached to the corrugated layer 1 parallel to the reinforcing strips 6, as shown in Figure 1(B).
The single faced corrugated board 12 may be made in the usual manner and the layer 1 and liner 2 are made of paper. If desired, the corrugated layer 1 may be made of a plurality of sheets of paper 1 a which are adhesively fixed together, as shown in Figure 3(B).
Reinforcing solutions such as phenol, paraffin, or resin may be applied to the corrugated layer to reinforce it. However, it is preferred that the liner 2 is affixed to a normal corrugated layer 1 without the layer being subjected to any reinforcing treatment.
The narrow strips 6 generally will have a width in the range of from 1 to 6cms, preferably 2 to 5 cms, so that they cover the sections which correspond to the top and bottom creases, 3 and 4 respectively.
Each single faced corrugated board 12 has at ieast two strips 6 to coverthe top crease and bottom crease. However, it may be necessary or desirable to apply additional strips 6 to other suitable locations, for example to strengthen the board 12.
A box formed from the corrugated board sheets of the present invention may be of any desired type.
Boxes formed from these board sheets maintain good air circulation around the goods placed therein, whilst safeguarding the goods from damage.
The corrugated board sheets of the present invention are stronger than conventional single faced corrugated board sheets, because of the strips 6, and so they can be used successfully in box manufacturing machines. The smooth running of these board sheets makes the tasks of creasing the sheets and of printing on the liner 2 relatively smooth. The creasing of the sheets takes place along the lines of the narrow strips 6 and so damage to the corrugated layer is avoided. The creasing can also be carried out more smoothly than direct creasing of the corrugated layer.
Another embodiment of the present invention is illustrated in Figure 4 of the accompanying drawings, in which the reference numerals refer to the same parts as those described in the embodiments of Figures 1 to 3. The box which is illustrated in Figure 4(A) is-a wrap around box which-is formed by folding the corrugated board sheet illustrated in Figure 4(8) in the many'ear indicated. The narrow reinforcing strips 6 are positioned along the crease lines of the corrugated board sheet, the reinforcing strips running in the direction of travel of the sheets through a box manufacturing machine.
1. A corrugated board sheet which comprises a liner which is adhesively fixed to one face of a corrugated layer, the other face of the corrugated layer having a plurality, of reinforcing strips adhesively fixed thereto.
2. A corrugated board sheet as claimed in claim 1 wherein the corrugated layer comprises a plurality of sheets of paper.
3. A corrugated board sheet as claimed in claim 1 or claim 2 wherein the reinforcing strips are from 1 to 6 cms in width.
4. A corrugated board sheet as claimed in claim 3 wherein the reinforcing strips are from 2 to 5 cms in width.
5. A corrugated board sheet as claimed in any one of the preceding claims which is in the form of a blank for a corrugated board box or a part thereof, wherein the reinforcing strips are positioned along the crease lines of the blank.
6. A corrugated board box which is formed from one or more corrugated board sheets as claimed in claim 5.
7. A corrugated board sheet as claimed in claim 1 substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to and as illustrated in Figures 1 and 3 of the accompanying drawings.
