Abstract

A tine 10 of steel has a tip 12 of tungsten carbide. A hole 14 allows mounting on a rotatable support (not shown) and movement having a radial component in relation to the support. A thick part 16 of the piece 10 maintains the separation of adjacent tines and increases angular momentum. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Tines for hard surface treatment The invention relates to tines for the treatment of hard surfaces, for example for making grooves in motorways or airport runways in order to improve vehicle road holdings. Such tines are described in British Patent Specification 1,306,673, and illustrated in its drawings.
A tine according to this invention comprises a piece of steel, a tungsten carbide cutting tip inset therein, and a hole in the steel piece whereby the tine may be mounted on a support member, the shape of the hole being such as to permit movement of the tine having a radial component with respect to an orbital path of a support member after impact characterized by a thick part of the steel piece for maintaining the separation of adjacent tines on the support member and increasing the angular momentum of the tine at a given speed of rotation.
Drawings Figure 1 is an end view of a tine according to the invention; and Figure 2 is a corresponding side view.
In the drawings, the tine comprises a piece 10 of steel having a cutting tip 12 of tungsten carbide inset therein. A hole 14 in the piece 10 allows the tine to be mounted on a support member (not shown) for movement as described above and as in the above mentioned Patent Specification. A thick part 16 of the piece 10 is provided for maintaining the separation of adjacent tines and increasing the angular momentum.
1. A tine for the treatment of hard surfaces which comprises a piece of steel, a tungsten carbide cutting tip inset therein, and a hole in the steel piece whereby the tine may be mounted on a support member, the shape of the hole being such as to permit movement of the tine having a radial compo next with respect to an orbital path of a support member after impact characterized by a thick part of the steel piece for maintaining the separation of adjacent tines on the support member and increasing the angular momentum of the tine at a given speed of rotation.
2. A tine for the treatment of hard surfaces as herein described with reference to the drawings.
