Abstract

An electric water heater tank 1 comprises an upper wall defining a recess 5 extending outwardly from the interior of the tank 1, a hot water pipe 9 for feeding hot water from the interior of the tank to outside the tank and a cold water pipe 7 for feeding cold water into the tank. The inlet of the hot water pipe is in communication with the recess and the cold water pipe is substantially in the form of an inverted U extending in a direction towards the upper wall of the tank. A thermostat pocket 10 is disposed in the cold water pipe 7 in the vicinity of the outlet. Such a construction can reduce water leakage in both a pressure type heater and free flow type heater. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Improvements in or relating to electric water heater tanks This invention relates to electric water heater tanks and to electric water heaters whenever comprising such tanks.
Immersion domestic electric water heaters, such as pressure type and free flow type, have been found to have certain disadvantages. Water leakage can occur in both types of heater. In the pressure type heater, when the water is heated from cold, the volume of the water is increased hence increasing the internal pressure and a large quantity of hot water or steam can be lost via the pressure relief valve until the water level falls below the inlet of the hot water pipe. In the free flow type heater water can leak from the hot water outlet even after closure of the water inlet pipe until the water level falls below the inlet of the hot water pipe. Furthermore, when the heater has not been used for a period of time the water level can fall below the heating element due, for example, to feed back to the water supply. As a result, there is the danger that the heating element, on reheating, will be damaged.
It is an object of this invention to overcome or at least mitigate the above mentioned disadvantages.
According to this invention there is provided an electric water heater tank comprising an upper wall defining a recess extending outwardly from the interior of the tank, a hot water pipe for feeding, in use, hot water from the interior of the tank to outside the tank, the inlet of the hot water pipe being in communication with the recess, and a cold water pipe for feeding, in use, cold water into the tank, the cold water pipe being substantially in the form of an inverted U and extending in a direction towards the upper wall, a thermostat pocket being disposed in the vicinity of the outlet of the cold water pipe, which outlet is situated in the lower region of the tank.
Advantageously, the recess is spherical.
Preferably, part of the cold water pipe extends in the vicinity of the recess, the part having an air vent hole in the upper wall thereof. In a preferred embodiment, the thermostat pocket extends into the outlet end of the cold water pipe.
This invention further relates to an electric water heater whenever comprising a tank in accordance with this invention. The electric water heater can be a pressure type or a free flow type. For a better understanding of this invention and to show the same may be put into effect, reference will now be made, by way of example, to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 shows a part-sectional elevational view of an embodiment of an electric water heater tank in accordance with this invention, and Figure 2 shows a plan view of the electric water heater tank of Figure 1 with the cover removed.
Referring to the drawings, there is shown an electric water heater tank 1 of an immersion domestic electric water heater. The tank 1 comprises a cyclindrical body 2 of elliptical cross section, an upper cover 3 and a lower cover 4, which upper and lower covers constitute, respectively, upper and lower end walls of the tank. The upper cover 3 is provided with an integral spherical recess 5, constituting a chamber which extends away from the interior of the tank.
The recess is centered on the axis of the cyclindrical body 2.
The lower cover 4 of the tank is provided with a series of apertures through which extend, respectively, a drain plug 6, a cold water pipe 7 for feeding cold water into the tank, heating element connection means 8 for an immersion water heater (not shown), a hot water pipe 9 for feeding hot water from the interior of the tank to outside the tank and a thermostat pocket 10.
The cold water pipe 7 is substantially in the form of an inverted U extending in a direction towards the upper cover 3. An upper end portion 11 of the cold water pipe 7 is situated in the vicinity of the recess 5 and is provided in the upper wall thereof with an air vent hole 12. The outlet of the cold water pipe 7 is situated in the lower region of tank 1. The thermostat pocket 10 extends into and is co-axial with the outlet end portion of the cold water pipe 7.
The hot water pipe 9 comprises a first portion 13 which extends vertically from the exterior of the tank into and through the interior thereof towards the upper cover 3 and which is positioned towards the side of the tank and a second portion 14 which extends from the upper end of the portion 1 3 towards and terminating in the recess 5.
Such an embodiment tank is advantageous for application both to pressure type electric water heaters and free flow type electric water heaters. The presence of the spherical recess 5 reduces water leakage in both the pressure and free flow type heaters. The inlet of the hot water pipe 9 extends into the recess 5 thereby enabling the inlet to be positioned higher than in heaters without such recess. As a result, in the free flow type heater having such a recess, only a few drops of water, if any, would leak from the outlet of the hot water pipe 9 after closure of the inlet of the cold water pipe 7. Similarly, in the pressure type heater, when internal pressure is increased on heating of the water, only a few drops, if any, of hot water will be released by the pressure relief valve because the steam can occupy the recess; the recess acting as a cushioning chamber to decrease the internal pressure.
Furthermore, due to the provision of the U shaped cold water pipe 7, the water always remains at a high level, but below the air vent hole 12, hence obviating the need for a non-return valve. Because of this, feed back of water to the water supply is eliminated. The positioning of the thermostat pocket 10 in the outlet of the cold water pipe 7 enables the thermostat to operate sensitively. For example, on cold water filling of the tank the heating element can operate immediately due to activation by the thermostat.
