Description
SPECIFICATION
Improvements in cold rooms
This invention relates to improvements in parts and components for, but not limited, to coldrooms.
One problem with known buildings, such as coidrooms, employing sliding doors, has been the means of providing suitable adjustment for the mounting of the wheel or roller to ensure that the door follows the desired path between the open and closed positions.
Another problem, particular with coldrooms, has been the peripheral sealing strip around the door to ice up and become stuck to the adjacent door frame.
Therefore, one object of the present invention is to provide a door member designed to adjustably support a door wheel or roller.
Another object of the present invention is to provide an adjustable mounting for a door wheel or roller which allows simple and easy adjustment of the wheel or roller relative to the door.
A further object is to provide a door assembly including the adjustable mounting hereinbefore described.
A still further object is to provide a means for eliminating, or at least reducing the likelihood, the sticking of a door sealing strip to the adjacent door frame due to icing up.
Other objects of the present invention will become apparent from the following description.
In one aspect, the invention resides in a door member including:
a body member;
an upstanding flange on the body member; and
means to mount a wheel or roller on the flange.
Preferably the body member is of channel section, having a base terminated by parallel side flanges, the respective faces of the door being fastened to the side flanges e.g. by screws, rivets or similar fasteners.
Preferably the flange is integral with the base and extends substantially normally thereto. Preferably the flange is offset from the centre-line of the base.
Preferably the means to mount a wheel or roller include a slot in the flange adapted to adjustably receive the wheel or roller axle.
In a second aspect, the invention resides in an adjustable mounting for a door wheel or roller including:
a body member;
an upstanding flange on the body member;
a slot in the flange;
an axle slidably mounted in the slot; and
a slidable member adjustably mounted on the body member and adjustably engaging the axle.
Preferably the slidable member is of L-shape in cross-section, the leg of the slidable member slidably engaging the rear face of the flange spaced from the wheel and roller. Preferably the foot of the slidable member is mounted on the body member by a bolt or stud which is operable to adjust and set the spacing between the foot and the body member.
In one preferred form, the axle is screwthreadably mounted on the leg of the slidable member to enable the spacing between the wheel and roller and the flange to be adjusted and set. In a second preferred form, the leg of the slidable member is clamped to the flange between a pair of nuts on the axle.
In a third aspect, the invention resides in a door assembly including the adjustable mounting hereinbefore described. Where the door assembly is used on a coldroom constructed of metal-polystyrene-metal laminated panels, the track may be fastened directly to the outer metal skin, e.g. by rivets, screws or on a bolster frame.
In a fourth aspect, the invention resides in a door frame comprising a first member including:
an architrave;
spacing means on the architrave to space the architrave from a wall; and
heater means mountable on the architrave to lie between the architrave and the wall.
Preferably the spacing means includes at least one channel formed by a pair of flanges extending from the rear face of the architrave, the heating means being mounted in the channel to heat the architrave. The heating means may include one or more heating coils.
Preferably the door frame has a second member secured to the first member. In one embodiment, the second member forms the second architrave and is connected to the first member by a face section. Alternatively, the second member has the second architrave and face section formed integrally, the face member being in sliding engagement with the first member to receive walls of varying thickness.
To enable the invention to be fully understood, preferred embodiment will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 shows an end sectional view of a door assembly;
Figure 2 shows an elevational view of a portion of the door assembly;
Figure 3shows an elevational view of a portion of the door in greater detail;
Figure 4 shows a sectional view of one embodiment of the door frame; and
Figure 5 shows a sectional view of a modified form of the door frame of Fig. 4.
Referring to Figs. 1 to 3, coldroom wall 10 is of metal-expanded polystyrene-metal laminated construction with an outer metal skin 11. The wall has a doorway (not shown) with a door head frame 12.
A roller track 13, of extruded aluminium, is fastened to the outer metal skin 11 along its length by screws or rivets (not shown). The track has a base plate 14. The track flange 1 5 is connected to and spaced from the base plate 14 by a substantially horizontal spacing plate 1 6. An anti-jump off flange 17 extends substantially from the base plate 1 4 and overlies the track flange 15, the distance between the flanges 15, 1 7 being less than the outer diameter of roller 18, having a peripheral flange 19, rolling on the track flange 15.
The door 20 is also of metal-expanded polystyrene-metal laminate construction, having metal inner- and outer skins 21, 22 respectively, and an inner core of expanded polystyrene bonded thereto.
The top frame 24 of the door is of substantially inverted -T cross section having a base 25, an upstanding flange 26 (off set from the centreline of the base) and a pair of downwardly extending side flanges 27, 28. Side flange 28 is secured to the outer skin 22 by suitable screws or rivets (not shown). The side flanges 27, 28 have their ends mitred to engage the mitred ends of the adjacent side flanges on the side frames 29.
An internal reinforcing angle 30 is bolted to the top frame 24 and side frame 29 to stiffen the door frame. A sealing strip support plate 31 is secured to the inner skin 21 of the door by suitable fasteners e.g. screws, rivets (not shown). The support plate 32 has a longitudinal groove 32 into which is engaged one top flange 33 of a substantially-shaped sealing strip 34. The other top flange 35 of the strip 34 is engaged by the free edge of the side flange 27 to secure the strip 34 in position.
Legs 36 of the strip 34 slidably engage the face of the door head frame 12 to form a seal therebetween.
A substantially vertical slot 37 is formed in the upstanding flange 26 to slidably receive the axle 38 of the roller 1 8.
A slidable member 39, of substantially Lshape cross-section, has its leg 40 slidably movable against the rear face of the flange 26. The leg 40 has a screw threaded aperture 41 into which the axle 38 is screwed. A nut 42 and washer 43 are provided on the axle 38 to clamp the flange 26 between the washer 43 and leg 40. To adjust the distance between the roller 1 8 and the flange 26 (and thereby the distance between the door 20 and the frame 12), the nut 42 is rotated to unclamp the flange 26, the axle 38 is rotated to screw in or out of the leg 40 to the required distance, and the flange is then reclamped by the nut.
The foot 44 of the slidable member 39 is adjustably connected to the base 23 of the top frame of the door 20 and the reinforcing angle 30 by a bolt or stud 45. The bolt is freely rotatable in aperture 46, 47 in the foot 44 and base 25 respectively and is screw threaded into screw-threaded aperture 48 in the corner angle 30. A lock nut 49 on the stud 45 clamps the base 25 between the nut 49 and the corner angle 30. To adjust the height of the roller 1 8 above the door 20, nuts 42 and 49 are loosened. Stud 45 is rotated to screw in or out of the corner angle 30 to increase or reduce the spacing between the foot 44 and the base 25. When the spacing has been realized, the nuts 42 and 49 are relightened.
As can easily be seen, this arrangement allows easy adjustment of the relationship of the door 20 to the frame 1 2 in two directions to ensure complete sealing of the door to the frame when closed, while allowing free and easy movement of the door between its opened and closed positions.
Referring to Fig. 4, the door frame 100 has a first member 101, and a second member 102 connected by a face section 1 03.
The first member 101 forms an artchitrave 104 which is engaged by the sealing strip (not shown) of a door. A rearwardly extending flange 105 engages the end face of the wall 106 and in inwardly turned flange 107 engages the outer skin 108 of the wall 106 to position the first member on the wall. Three spacing flanges 109, 110 and 111 extend rearwardly from the first member 101 and also engage the outer skin 1 08. Channels 112, 11 3 are formed between flanges 109, 110 and 111 and 105 respectively.
A heater coil 114, connected to a suitable source of energy, is mounted in each of the channels 112, 11 3 to heat the architrave 104 above a temperature at which ice will form between the architrave 104 and the sealing strip, thereby preventing the strip from sticking to the architrave.
The first member 101 has a face lip 11 5 and a slot 11 6 is formed between the lip and the flange 105.
The face section 103 is sealably mounted in the slot 11 6 by a suitable sealing strip 117, and is secured to the flange 105 by a suitable fastener 11 8 e.g. a screw or rivet.
The second member 102 is of substantially
L-shape cross-section and forms a second architrave 11 9 and a face portion 120, the latter being secured to the face section 103 by suitable fasteners (not shown).
In a modified form shown in Fig. 5 the face section 103 is formed integrally with the second member 102a. As the face section 103 is slidably received in the slot 116, the frame can be used with walls 106 of varying thickness. For example, if the slot is of a depth of e.g. 50cm, walls of varying thickness within a range of e.g. 25cm can be accommodated by a single assembly.
Where the walls are of a thickness greater than this range, a frame being a composite of the two examples illustrated can be employed where the second member 1 02a of Fig. 5 replaces the member 102 of Fig. 4, and is fixed to the face section 1 03. By this arrangement i.e. using first member 101 and second member 102a, a modular system is availale to suit walls of any thickness as the frame can be assembled as shown in Fig. 5, or as in Fig.
4, using face sections 103 cut to the required width.
The door frames illustrated in Figs. 4 and 5 are highly suitable for prefabricated coldroom construction as they can be used with walls of varying thickness and the heating means ensures that icing up does not occur between the frame and door sealing strip.
Various changes and modifications may be made to the embodiments described without departing from the scope of the invention.
