Abstract
203,192. Hopkins, L. S. Sept. 11, 1922. Brakes.-Relates to stop-mechanism of the kind in which automatic application of the brake is effected by cessation of the travel of the tone-arm. According to the invention, the brake-bar carries a star-wheel which is normally rotated by the turntable spindle, but is prevented from rotation when the tone-arm stops, whereupon the pressure exerted on the star-wheel by the spindle causes the brake to be released and applied. In the construction shown, a bar 17 carrying a brakepad 20 has a star-wheel 33 pivoted thereon, and also bears a lever 36 on which is a pad 37 adapted to engage frictionally a bow spring 15 mounted on an arm 11 carried by the tone-arm. Screws 23, 25 project through slots 21, 22 in the bar 17, the brake being held inoperative when the screw 25 is in engagement with the offset end of the slot 22. As the turntable spindle 3 rotates, an arm 35 thereon turns the star-wheel step by step until a pin 34 on the star swings the lever 36, against the action of a spring 38, into contact with a stop 31. The pin 34 then passes the lever 36, and, if the tone-arm is moving, friction between the parts 15, 37 assists the spring 38 to return the lever to the normal position shown, during the ensuing revolution of the star-wheel. If, however, the tone-arm has stopped when the pin 34 shifts the lever 36 in the manner described, the lever is prevented by the member 15 from moving back to the normal position, so that the next revolution of the star brings the pin 34 against a lug 40 on the lever. Further rotation of the star-wheel is thus stopped, and the pressure of the arm 35 on the star moves the bar 17 laterally, bringing the main part of the slot 22 into line with the screw 25. A spring 27 thereupon slides the bar outwardly and applies the brake to the turntable 5. In a modification the lever 36 is pivoted to the motor-board 2, instead of on the bar 17, and carries on a resilient member a pad engaging with a rigid convex member moving with the tone-arm. A further modification comprises, instead of the lever 36, a bell-crank, one arm of which is formed as an anchor coacting with two pins on the star-wheel, the other arm resiliently supporting a friction-pad engaging with a curved member moving with the tone-arm.
