Abstract

The object of the invention is to provide apparatus for installing conveyor belts on inclined conveyors. The apparatus comprises a support frame (10), (12,13) on which is mounted a clamp (44), guide rollers (36,37), a braked roller (14) and an adjustable auxiliary roller (25). The braked roller (14) is braked by means of a disc (18) acted on by caliper assemblies secured to the support frame to control the passage of belting (51) to the inclined conveyor. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Apparatus for installing conveyor belts on inclined conveyors The invention relates to apparatus for installing conveyor belts on inclined conveyors.
In order to instal a conveyor belt sately on an inclined conveyor, it is necessary to provide means of restraint to prevent the belt running down the slope under its own weight. Hitherto the necessary restraint has been provided by passing the belt through a stationary clamp which applied a frictional restraint to the belt surface.
According to the invention there is provided apparatus for installing conveyor belts on inclined conveyors comprising support means, at least a pair of rollers rotatably and coaxially mounted on the support means such that a belt may pass around said rollers in sequence and braking means for braking at least one of said rollers.
Preferably one of said rollers is braked, and the braking means preferably comprise a disc secured to and coaxially with said braked roller and caliper means mounted on the support means and frictionally engageable with the disc.
the braked roller is preferably rotatable about an axis fixed relative to the support means and an auxiliarly roller is preferably adjustably mounted on the support means.
the auxiliary roller is preferably arranged below and foward of the braked roller relative to the proposed direction of motion of the belt, the arrangement being such that, in use, the belt is passed first around the auxiliary roller and then around the braked roller, the belt preferably being in contact with at least half of the cylindrical surface of the braked roller.
At least one guide roller is preferably rotatably mounted on the support means before the auxiliary roller and after the braked roller.
A belt clamp is preferably mounted on the means forward of the rollers relative to the direction of motion of the belt.
By way of example, one embodiment of apparatus for installing conveyor belts on inclined conveyors according to the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure lisa side view of apparatus for installing conveyor belts on inclined conveyors, and Figure 2 is a plan view of the apparatus of Figure 1.
As shown in the Figures, apparatus for installing conveyor belts on inclined conveyors has a support framework comprising a pair of elongate rigid metal members 10, 11 supported on a pair of rigid elongate metal beams 12, 13.
A braked roller 14 is fixed to a shaft 15. The shaft 15 is rotatably mounted on support blocks 16 and 17 secured to members 10 and 11 respectively. At one end of the shaft 15 outside the support block 16 is secured a brake disc 18. The shaft 15 is splined so that the brake disc is secured for rotation with the shaft 15. Two brake caliper assemblies 19 and 20 are mounted on the member 10. Each caliper assembly has a pair of brake calipers 21 on which are mounted friction linings 22. The friction linings 22 of the calipers are movable into and out of frictional engagement with the disc 18 by rotation of wheels 23 and 24 on the assemblies 19 and 20 respectively.
Rotation of the wheels 23 and 24 in the appropriate direction causes approach or separation of the pairs of calipers 21.
An adjustable auxiliary roller 25 is secured to a shaft 26. The shaft 26 is rotatably mounted on movable arms 27, 28. The arm 27 is rotatably mounted at one end on a support 29 secured to the support member 10. The other end of the arm 27 is supported by a shaft 30 one end of which is secured to a sleeve 31 rotatably mounted on a stub shaft 32 secured to the arm 27 and the other end of which is screw-threaded and passes through a hole in a stub shaft 33 rotatably mounted on a support block 34 secured to the member 10. A scrnwqhreaded nut 35 prevents the shaft 30 from passing through the hole in the stub shaft 33 and the position of the nut 35 on the shaft 30 defines the position of the auxiliary roller 25.The adjustable support arrangement for the arm 28 is similar to the support arrangement for the arm 27 and will therefore not be described in detail.
In addition to the break roller 14 and the auxilary roller 25, the apparatus has guide rollers 36 and 37.
Guide roller 36 is secured to a shaft 38 rotatably mounted on support blocks 39 and 40 secured to members 10 and 11 respectively. Similarly, guide roller 37 is secured to a shaft 41 rotatably mounted on supports 42 and 43 secured to the members 10 and 11 respectively.
A belt clamp generally indicated at 44 is secured to the members 10 and 11. The clamp 44 comprises lower and upper separable elongate clamping members 45 and 46 respectively, a clamping force being exerted by appropriate rotation of wheels 47 and 48 which engage by means of screw-threads associated bolts 49 and 50 passing through the clamping members 45 and 46.
Figure 1 shows the path of a belt 51 through the apparatus. The belt first passes through the clamp 44, over the guide roller 36, down and around the auxiliary roller 25, up and around the braked roller 14, and finally underthe guide roller 37 before continuing to the conveyor. The position of the auxiliary roller below and in front of the braked roller 14 relative to the direction of motion of the belt 51 maintains a large arc of contact of the belt on the braked roller 14. In the embodiment shown, the belt contacts more than half the surface area of the braked roller 14. This ensures that when the braked roller 14 is braked by the caliper assemblies 19 and 20 the belt will not slide on the surface of the braked roller 14.
When installing belting using the apparatus, the belting is passed through the apparatus and pulled on to the structure using a tow rope in known manner. The leading edge of the belting is guided by attaching it to a sledge which will run over the supporting roller sets of the conveyor. When the weight of the belting down the slope is sufficient to permit itto descend underthe action of gravity, its speed can be controlled by braking the braked roller 14. Temporary fixed clamps may be used to hold the end of the belting while new lengths are adjoined or if the operation must be stopped for any reason. The clamp 44 provides initial tension in the belt to ensure that the belt makes intimate contact with the braked roller 14.
