Abstract
202,934. Godfrey, A. Feb. 27, 1922. Perforating or dividing by fusion. - In an oxyacetylene or like jet cutting machine a blowpipe supported in one plane from a compound slide is used in conjunction with a rotary feed device adapted to rotate relatively to the slides in a parallel plane so as to enable large or small circular or arcuate or eccentric cuts to be executed. The blowpipe 11 is carried by a sleeve 12 having an extension 12a which is adjustable by a screw 14 in a rotary head 13 mounted in a carriage 8 traversable laterally on a slideway 5, itself traversable longitudinally on a number of connected girders 1 secured to crossgirders 3 on pillars 4. The feeds are described in Specification 202,666. A blowpipe 11 is also carried by a jointed arm 52 or a pivoted and telescopic arm, carried by an extension 8 from the carriage. The arm 52 may be locked by screws 54 for making straight cuts or may be freed, in which case a portion immediately over the. blowpipe is pressed against templates, either stationary or revolving, while one of the feeds is engaged or while the work is rotated on the table 82. In a further modification the free end of the jointed arm may be attached to or mounted on the arm 12, which may be rotated, the blowpipe 11 being pressed towards the centre of rotation into contact with a template. The apparatus mav be constructed so that the rotary arm extends below the bottom edge of the arm 52. The blowpipes may have limited vertical movement and be suspended at an adjustable height above the work or supported thereupon by adjustable rollers 53. The table carries a worm wheel 81 which is rotated by a worm 76 through speed reducing and reversing tumbler gears 75, as described in Specification 202,666, from the flexible feed shaft 15 or other source. The gearing is carried by a box 77 mounted on a vertical pivot and normally held with its worm in engagement with the worm wheel by a spring 79 which holds it in contact with a screw stop. It is disengaged by an inclined rod 94, which is raised by a link on a shaft 92 operated by a hand lever 92. The tumbler gear is moved by a rod carried by a link on a shaft 93 operated by a hand lever 93. The table may be vertically adjusted by a screw 89 rotated by a worm wheel 88 through a worm and spur gearing rotated by a hand wheel 83 on a shaft 84. The shafts 84, 92, 93 are all splined and slidably mounted so that their operating handles are accessible for any width of work. Specifications 130,450, 163,432, 163,625, 202,932, and 202,933 also are referred to.
