Abstract

A vacuum cleaner is provided with a horizontally vibrating brush at the front of the cleaner. The brush moves from left to right and right to left with the object of parting the carpet fibres and loosening dust and dirt particles. It may be operated by electrical impulse or air pressure and need not be directly connected to the fan motor. Immediately behind the brush is an air scoop designed to 'float' or rest upon the surface of the pile to draw up particles for collection in the container. The brush design enables surface dust to be removed from corners immediately in front of the cleaner. Long bristles are indicated to enable it to accommodate piles of different depth, however adjustment may be provided and a short bristle brush may be used. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Improvements relating to domestic upright vacuum cleaners The accepted cleaning principal in an upright cleaner is the rotating brush incorporating bars to create a beating action combined with air suction.
This principal has been based upon short pile carpets and it becomes less effective and can even be detrimental when used on long pile or shaggy pile carpets which are popular today.
It also suffers from the disadvantage of being unable to contact dust and dirt lodged in corners particularly that lodged at the base of skirting boards.
In this form of cleaner it is necessary to provide a mechanical connection between the fan motor and the rotating brush thus limiting the positioning of the motor within the cleaner. A further disadvantage of this type of cleaner is the friction created when moving the cleaner backwards against the forward rotational movement of the brush.
In the proposed invention a horizontal vibrating brush at the front of the cleaner is used in place of a rotating brush. The brush will vibrate from left to right and right to left with the object of parting the carpet fibres and loosening dust and dirt particles at the base of the pile. It may be operated by electrical impulse or air pressure and need not be directly connected to the fan motor.
Immediately behind the brush is an air scoop designed to float or rest upon the surface of the pile and to draw up particles for collection in the dust container.
It is thought that the brush design would enable surface dust to be removed from corners immediately in front of the cleaner.
In the attached drawing the brush is shown having long flexible bristles which it is thought will enable it to accomodate piles of varying depth, however it may be found to be necessary to provide some adjustment for the brush to ensure correct contact pressure with the carpet surface in all instances. A short bristle brush may also be used.
Invention Brief - Brush movement will be left to right, right to left.
Adva ntages - 1. Improved frontal cleaning such as at the junction of skirting board and carpet, stair tread and riser.
2. Improved flexibility due to independent motor control.
3. Speed control will enable brush movement to be altered to suit carpet texture or brush may be stationary when cleaner is used on exceptionally long piles.
4. Replacement brush will be cheaper and easier to fit.
