Abstract

A portable basin for use in washing a person's hair when lying in bed, has a recess 13 in its upper edge for the neck of the person, the edge of the recess being covered by a removable strip 14 of foamed plastics material. The basin also has a drain outlet 15 which may have a pipe fitting 16 to which a length of hose 17 is connected. Description

SPECIFICATION Portable basins This invention relates to portable basins. More particularly but not exclusively the invention relates to a portable basin for use in washing the hair of a person, for example when the person is in bed.
It is well known, particularly in ladies' hairdressing salons, to provide a basin having a recess in its front edge whereby a lady whose hair is to be washed lies with her head over the basin, face upwards, and her neck in the recess in the front edge of the basin. Such a basin in always a fixed basin.
However, for a person confined to bed, in order to have his or her hair washed the person has to be manipulated to the side of the bed so that his or her head may be positioned over a bucket on the floor or a low table. If this is not possible, the person must rely on the use of hair washing powders.
According to the invention there is provided a portable basin comprising a moulded base and a surrounding wall, the basin having a recess in the upper edge of the surrounding wall which allows a person whose hair is to be washed to place his or her neck in the recess in the surrounding wall, and a drain outlet.
The fact that the basin is portable means that the basin may readily be used for washing the hair of a person who is lying in bed in a comfortable and convenient manner.
Preferably the upwardly facing edge of the recess has a removable strip of flexible material, e.g. foamed plastics material.
It is also preferred that a pad of foamed plastics material is provided to be placed in the basin adjacent the recess on which pad the person may rest his or her head.
The drain outlet is preferably provided in or adjacent the base of the basin, and preferably includes a pipe fitting to which a length of hose is or may be connected.
By way of example, specific embodiments in accordance with the invention will be described with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 is a perspective view, partly cutaway, of a portable basin; Figure 2 is a detailed view of the drain outlet of the basin of Fig. 1; and Figure 3 is a part view of a basin having a modified drain outlet.
Referring to Figs. 1 and 2, a portable basin for use in washing the hair of a person lying in bed comprises a vacuum moulded basin of styrene material having a base 10 and a surrounding wall 11. To increase the rigidity of the basin the base 10 is ribbed and the surrounding wall 11 has a peripheral rim 1 2.
In this embodiment the basin is substantially rectangular in shape and in the upper edge of one of the sides of the basin, which in use is its front side, there is a curved recess 1 3.
The upwardly facing concave edge of the recess 1 3 has a removable strip 1 4 of foamed plastics material fitted thereon to provide comfort to the person having his or her hair washed.
In one front corner of the base 10 of the basin there is a drain outlet 1 5 connected by a pipe fitting 1 6 to a length of hose 1 7.
Water from the basin may thus drain through the hose into a bucket (not shown). In this embodiment, the drain outlet has a hollow trap 1 8 welded over an aperture in the base 10, and the pipe fitting 1 6 is a bolt 1 9 passing through the wall of the trap 1 8 with its head 20 within the trap and held in position by a nut 21. The hose 1 7 is attached to the stem of the bolt 1 9 by a screw clip 22.
A pad 23 of foamed plastics material is placed loosely within the basin adjacent the recess 13.
Fig. 3 shows a basin which is the same as the basin of Figs. 1 and 2 except that the drain outlet is a short length of pipe 25 which passes through an aperture in the surrounding wall 11 of the basin adjacent one front corner of the base 1 0. The pipe 25 is welded in position and has a length of hose 26 attached to its free end by a spring clip 27.
To use either basin described above for washing the hair of a person lying in bed, the person is positioned on his or her back and low in the bed. A pillow is slipped under the person's shoulders. The basin is placed on the bed in the normal position for the pillow, with the recessed or front side of the basin nearest the person's shoulders, and the person's head is lowered onto the foam pad 23 positioned inside the basin adjacent the recess 1 3. The person's neck is thereby located in the recess 13, and the position of the pad may be adjusted so that the person's head is wholly within the basin and the person is comfortable. Finally the free end of the hose is placed in a bucket beside the bed. The person's hair is then washed in the normal manner, the water draining through the hose into the bucket. In practice, the basin tends to tip slightly forwardly about its bottom front edge and for this reason it is desirable that the drain outlet 1 5 is positioned close to the front side of the basin to ensure its effectiveness.
Although it is intended that the basin should mainly be used by persons who are confined to bed, it will be appreciated that it may readily be used by anybody who requires to have his or her hair washed in the same manner, i.e. facing upwardly and in a place which is suitable or convenient for the user, e.g. in the user's own home.
