Abstract

202,791. Ridgway, J., and Ridgway & Sons, Ltd., W. June 24, 1922. Augers.-In an auger of the type comprising a point at the end of a cylindrical shank and a substantially radial cutting edge at one end of a helical strip integral with and extending outwardly from the shank, the helical strip extends round the shank for less than a complete revolution and the pitch of the forward end determines the rate of feed. The tool comprises a helical cutting portion C and a point B, preferably in the form of a triangular pyramid. The helix has a cutting edge D which may form a continuation of one edge of the point, and extends for more than half a revolution round the shank, being provided at the rear with a cutting spur E operating in advance of the edge D. The point may be threaded and the shank may be cut away at F to provide clearance for chips. More than one spur E may be provided.
