Abstract

A display device for displaying the speed and acceleration of a vehicle has a digital display 2 for indicating the speed and an analog display 6 adjacent the digital display for indicating the acceleration or deceleration of the vehicle. The digital display 2 comprises three seven segment display instruments 3, 4 and 5 whilst the analog display 6 has two segments 8 and 9, one for indicating acceleration 9 and the other for indicating deceleration 8. Each segment has several lighting elements 7 which are illuminated in dependence on the magnitude of the acceleration or deceleration. The two displays 2 and 6 are housed in a single unit 1. Also disclosed is an arrangement where the analog display 6 is straight instead of circular. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION A display device for displaying the speed and acceleration of a vehicle.
The present invention relates to a display device having a digital display instrument for displaying the speed and acceleration of a vehicle, in particular a motor vehicle.
Display of the speed of vehicles is generally achieved in an analog form by a pointer displaced relative to a circular scale, in dependence on the speed of the vehicle. Such displays allow the approximate speed of the vehicle and the variation thereof to be read rapidly.
Also, display devices are known wherein display of the speed is indicated in numerals, i.e. digitally. These displays permit rapid reading of the exact speed of the vehicle, but recognition of a variation in the speed is relatively difficult.
According to the present invention there is provided a display device for displaying the speed and acceleration of a vehicle, having a digital display instrument for displaying the speed of the vehicle, and an analog display instrument for displaying the acceleration of the vehicle, the analog display instrument being adjacent the digital display instrument.
Due to the display of the vehicle acceleration and the arrangement of the analog display instrument indicating this acceleration adjacent the digital display instrument indicating the speed, the speed of the vehicle and the magnitude of the acceleration and hence the variation of the speed can be read simultaneously. In particular, if electrical display instruments are provided for displaying the two values, the electrical signal for the analog display instrument indicating the acceleration can be obtained by differentiation of the speed-dependent signal fed to the digital display instrument.
According to a first embodiment, both display instruments are combined in a display unit. In addition to ease manufacture and assembly, such a combination of the two display instruments also has the advantage that the two displays can be associated with each other in optimum fashion.
Preferably the analog display instrument is designed in the form of a band display. Such a band display permits particularly rapid determination of variation in speed. More preferably, the band display comprises a plurality of lighting elements arranged adjacent each other and individually controllable. Light-emitting diodes, electro-luminescence cells or liquid crystal cells can be used as the lighting elements as can other display instruments with a controllable variation in brightness.
According to a second embodiment, the band display is designed to be circular and surrounding the digital display. Alternatively the ribbon display is straight and arranged above or below the digital display.
The invention will now be described in greater detail, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein: Figure 1 shows a plan view of a display device having a circular ribbon display; and Figure 2 shows a plan view of a display device having a straight ribbon display.
The display device shown in Fig. 1, which is located in a single unit in part of an instrument display 1 comprises a first display 2 for displaying the speed of the motor vehicle. The first display 2 comprises three sevensegment display instruments 3, 4 and 5.
Arranged about the first display 2 is the band-form second display 6 comprising a plurality of individually controllable lighting elements 7. The second display 6, serving for displaying the acceleration of the motor vehicle, is subdivided in two elements 8 and 9, the elements 8 serving to display deceleration and the element 9 displaying the acceleration.
With the display as shown in Fig. 1, the motor vehicle is in a braking or deceleration phase, all lighting segments 7 of the element 8 being illuminated and travelling with an instantaneous speed of 1 60 kilometres per hour. In the figure, the segments 7 illuminated are shown as stippled. In use, the segments 7 are illuminated consecutively from the zero position.
In the embodiment of the display device shown in Fig. 2, the band-form second display 6' is arranged above the digital display 2. The band-form second display 6' again comprises a plurality of lighting elements 7 which, in this embodiment are arranged adjacent each other in a straight line. In this embodiment, triggering of the individual light elements takes place independently of whether deceleration or acceleration is occurring, triggering always being from left towards right, i.e. with increasing deceleration or acceleration of the vehicle, and illuminated part of the band becomes lengthened in the direction towards the right. In the position of the display shown in Fig. 2 the motor vehicle is travelling with an instantaneous speed of 75 kilometres per hour, and being braked or accelerated slightly as shown by the stippling.
As is clear from the figure the band-form second display 6' is designed so that the lighting elements in the initial zone of the display are wider than subsequent elements, so that, even with slight acceleration or deceleration, a clearly visible acceleration display is produced.
